aes_sedai's Full Review: Lixit Quick Lock Crock 20oz
The Lixit Quick Lock Crock bowl is a removable dish that can double as a food or water bowl for all sorts of pets; it is available in two sizes – a 10-oz and a 20-oz. We use ours for our ferrets so that they can have a choice between drinking from their water bottle or, as they sometimes prefer (especially our big boy, Indy), the dish.
This bowl is constructed of extremely heavy-duty plastic; it will certainly stand up to the most abusive punishment (dropping from the Empire State Building, driving over it with a full cement truck, single-hand crushing by Superman, etc.). It is made in several pieces: The bowl, which has an interlocking tab on the bottom; the flat extender arm that is notched so that the bowl can lock into it securely and has a tab or flange at the other end for attaching to your cage or carrier door; and the tightening tab that fits on the outside of your cage or door, that is secured using a standard wing nut (which of course is included). Basically, you attach the extender arm to the cage/door with the wing nut; then you attach the crock bowl by fitting its tabbed bottom into the notched hole of the arm and turning it so that they lock. Voila! The bowl is pretty easy to both attach and remove for simple cleaning, which is especially important when you are doing it daily (or even more often, if using this unit in a travel carrier or cage). Also, the way the unit attaches to the cage with the use of a single wing nut makes this easy to use on pretty much any cage or carrier door.
I have two minor issues with this unit. Our extender arm is a little bit bent, so when the crock is attached to the cage, the bowl is tipped slightly, which makes it easier for messy ferrets (or whatever animal is using it) to slosh water out of it. Ours seems to be a design flaw – possibly a mistake in this particular run rather than being typical of all of them. Secondly, when twisting the bowl onto the extension, water easily sloshes over the side and gets a little messy. I’ve personally found it much easier to remove the crock, clean it, replace it, and then fill it with water from a cup rather than filling the thing first and then attaching it.
Overall, this bowl is an excellent product. Top-quality, heavy-duty construction; the fact that it’s easy to attach to the cage; the ability to remove it for cleaning and/or filling; the fact this it is made to fit just about any cage or carrier, all make it a terrific choice for your pet.
