In our home we spent quite a bit of time working with a small set of Lego Quatro’s and another set of Mega Bloks, but eventually those big blocks got old and I broke a new set of Lego’s out for my son. This set, the Lego Duplo 4422 Handy Box, is a set of Lego’s I found on clearance nearly a year ago for a measly $5, the only catch was the box was open and I wasn’t for sure if I was getting every last one, the original retail was $24.99 Upon on returning home I counted the blocks, to find every single one there and then hid the whole thing away in the closet, that is until the last few months.
Quatro, Duplo, Help I’m Lego Challenged…
Before my son, the only Lego’s I had ever encountered where my brothers and those are some old blocks nowadays. Lego makes their blocks in a variety of sizes. At this point we own 2 different sizes. Out first set, was Quatro (about 4 times the size of a standard Lego), this set is called by the name Duplo (about 2 times the size of a standard Lego).
These size differences make a difference for the age recommendation. A Quatro set will most likely have a low starting age recommendation, like 1 year old, while the Duplo sets are recommended for slightly older toddlers. This particular set is recommended for ages 2 to 5.
Interconnectivity
Lego blocks are supposedly made to fit together between the different sizes. Between the Quatro and Duplo sets I’ve found that the do fit, but not snuggly.
In This Set…
Lego Duplo 4422 is a basic set of blocks with no frills. The set includes 120 pieces, which includes 14 green 2X2 blocks, 16 red 2X2 blocks, 10 green 4X2 blocks, 10 red 4X2 blocks, 6 green 4X2 base 1X2 topped slanted blocks, 18 blue 2X2 blocks, 18 yellow 2X2 blocks, 10 blue 4X2 blocks, 10 yellow 4X2 blocks, 1 blue 6X2 block, 1 yellow 6X2 block and 6 blue 4X2 base 1X2 topped slanted blocks.
The Lego’s are made out of a high-grade plastic and are hard. There is no give to the plastic like the Quatro blocks.
My Son’s Experience…
My son still seems to be on a bit of a destruction mode when it comes to things I build with blocks. At 2 however, he can build his own little creations. This set has made it possible to really build something and have it be recognizable. With the 120 pieces you can make a building or you can follow some of the examples on the box. The box includes ideas such as trees, a house, a train, a boat, a steer, an elephant and a man. There are no instructions for the examples, but they are self explanatory and easy to figure out for adults and older children.
My son can work with the blocks fairly well and they are easy to put together and don’t get ‘stuck’ together. They hold together well enough to move projects, but aren’t difficult to undo at the same time. My son doesn’t really build anything recognizable on my standards, but often these blocks can keep his attention for a good half an hour.
Clean Up
Due to the number of these little blocks and the fact that they are hard we keep these picked up. We usually pull these out for playing, play with them and then return them to their tub and put them up and out of the way. I’ve stepped on these blocks before and the experience is not pleasant. For that small reason, we leave the Lego Duplo’s as a controlled activity.
When the Lego’s are dirty they are also super easy to clean. I generally dump ours in the sink with hot water and a dab of bleach and then let them dry I the dish rack.
Overall Lego Duplo 4422 is a handy block building set. There aren’t any special pieces in this set that are unique, but it gives you a good base of the blocks that are used the most.
