| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Clikits Trendy Totes |
As you may know from previous product reviews, the brood and I are hard-core Lego fanatics. My oldest has had a girlfriend for a while now and likes to spoil her from time to time, one of his favorite purchases was the Polaroid I-Zone but after realizing that the replacement film was going to cost and arm and a leg, he opted to try and find her something else
something just for her. When the Click-It sets first appeared in the Lego World Shop and the Lego Magazine I knew that my neighbors daughter would love them. Since she spent almost every day at my house, I wanted to make sure that she had some girlie things to play with. This was our first experience with the Lego Click-Its but it certainly wasnt our last. I purchased some of the smaller sets for her to play with and kept a careful eye on her since there were some small pieces in the kits. She is the kind of kid that will sit at a table for hours on end stringing beads; just when she is almost done making a bracelet or necklace she decides to start over usually because she found a better color scheme. Thats when I knew that the Click-It sets would be a huge hit with her, she could reuse all the pieces, change them when ever she wanted and swap them with other pieces from other Click-It sets.
But What Are Lego Click-Its?
Cleverly marketed toward girls, the Click-It series is a colorful, fun and entertaining line of accessories, picture frames, totes, jewelry and more. The main colors of the Click-Its are the standard girlie colors pink, blue, purple, orange
you get the point. Depending on which type of item you purchase you will get anywhere from ten to over fifty pieces that can be arranged any way you like on a purse, picture frame, necklace
etc. The click-it items can be reused over and over again and almost all of them can be interchanged to maximize your choices when creating something new. To use the Click-It system all you need are some string fingers to press them in to place and do the same thing in reverse to get them back out of the hole. When using them on hair ties or enclaves the process is a little easier than attaching them to totes, picture frames or wrap bracelets.
What You Get
Included in this project kit is the large tote bag made of thick but flexible plastic. It is slightly opaque so you can carry things discreetly but since there is no zipper or closure at the top, I wouldnt carry anything top secret in it. The size is about ten inches by eight inches but does expand a bit due to the plastic sides. Aimee usually carries her Walkman, a few CDs, a notebook or two and some pens when she comes over to study that is if she doesnt have her backpack with her. The elements that can be added to the front of the tote include pink and blue plastic flowers, yellow, blue, pink and purple petals and a few hearts. These are attached to the front of the tote with an unlimited number of design possibilities. Theres a total of twenty three holes on the front, into each of these you can place one of the elements you can place one of the petals behind one of the plastic pieces and when they are affixed, they are pretty sturdy. There is a chance that the petals will get caught on things but for the most part it seems to be a pretty sturdy tote. Aimee really like it and uses it several times a week. Given that this doesnt have a lock at the top or a way to secure it, she never uses to for day trips or when she attends classes.
The tote is pretty sturdy but if you carry anything that weighs more than a few pounds it will bend and theres the possibility that the handles will break. This isnt something that will tolerate a tremendous amount of abuse so make sure the little girl that gets this knows to be a little careful with it. You will also get white pressure points on the outside or inside of the tote if something is pressed against it for an extended period of time like the hard edge of a book or compact disc case. Given that you get a good number of elements with this, about 80 that are completely usable, girls will have a lot of variety available to them when they want to rearrange things or give their tote a new look. The smaller jewelry sets are a great way to give them a little more color to work with or some of the other shapes like hearts, different shaped stars, squares and circles.
Price
All of the totes in this series have a retail price of $15.00, something that might be viewed as expensive to some but when you consider that you can change the overall design of the tote when ever you like it softens the blow. When my son wanted to order this for his sweetie I rolled my eyes and asked him if he really wanted to spend that much on a gift and suggested that maybe he should save it for Christmas or her birthday. Being as stubborn as his mamma, he slapped down his stack of ones from his allowance along with the Lego item number, smiled at me and said he was more than sure. When he gave it to her and I saw her face light up I knew that it was well worth the suggested retail price. Hopefully hell retain his good shopping instinct as he gets older because he sure and pick the gifts!
Other Sets
If the pink version of this tote isnt something that appeals to you, theres a blue and tangerine [orange] version also available. The actual style of the bag differs slightly from color to color but for the most part, they will hold the same amount of stuff and are pretty sturdy however that arent really practical for school or trips to the mall since they dont have a way to completely close the tops or protect the contents if its dropped or tipped over. The photo that is shown with this listing is for the Hot Pink Trendy Tote; the others that are currently available include the Sky Blue Trendy Tote [7512] and the Tangerine Trendy Tote [5511] The blue one is square and the tangerine one is more of a basket style rectangular at best. Neither of them are as big as the hot pink version so if you are shopping for a girl that needs a bit more room, this is the best pick.
The Bottom Line
This would be a great pick for any girl that loves pink hot pink to be exact. I wont go so far to say that Barbie loves will fall for this but it could be a good pick for those that like a little variety, like to change things around or are constantly bugging you for something new. With this, all you have to do is pick up a few of the smaller sets for extra click-it elements and they will have a blast trying out different designs. These are extremely popular overseas and are one of the few things that my nieces asked for this year. Of course, what kind of an aunt would I be if I didnt spoil them with a few of the smaller jewelry sets
As always, thanks for the read!
