| Ladysmom's Full Review: Krups 358-70 La Glaciere 1.5 Quart Ice Cream Maker |
With he weather turning hotter and hotter our thoughts turn to that beloved concoction called ice cream. No matter what your taste in ice cream is it’s one of those things that when you crave it you really crave it and want it have it handy just in case.
I love Blue Bell Ice Cream. There Homemade Vanilla is to die for. Taste just like those Sunday afternoons sitting on the back step with your family turning the crank on that old wooden ice cream maker. You also knew that your Mother was going to let you lick the paddle once it was finished so you kept calling Daddy to heap on more ice and add the salt so it would freeze faster so you could get to the important part of making this wonderful brain freezing, tummy pleasing convection. EATING.
You know this is the one-day that your parents didn’t fuss because you got so sticky from trying to eat as much as you could.
Now you can have those memories to share with your children but not all the hassle and without sitting outside with all the mosquitoes, heat and all the pets trying to horn in your special treat.
I purchased the Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker several years ago because I wanted that homemade taste without the hassle of hand churning it.
The Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker came flying across the screen one Sunday afternoon on QVC. It was 100 degrees outside and they had several of these machines going at one time making all kinds of ice cream. I can remember sitting there almost drooling. It looked so good and refreshing. I could almost taste it while the host, David Venable, was tasting. He made it look so good that I knew right then and there I had to purchase it. I grabbed the phone and in less than 5 minutes I had purchased this little machine that was going to make my dreams come true and my waist and hiney larger.
5 days after I ordered the Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker it was there at my doorstep waiting for me. I took it out of the box and washed all the parts and placed the cylinder in the freezer.
The directions said that it’s good to go after about 8 hours in the freezer. I didn’t find that it froze the ice cream hard enough so we ate what we had made, washed the machine again and placed the cylinder in the freezer for a 24 hour freeze. Perfect.
The first round of ice cream I followed the directions in the book that came with the Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker and really didn’t like it because it recommends cooking and to me that takes away some of the flavor so I decided I would call Mom and find out what she used to do when we were kids and try to scale it down to a size befitting the 1.5 quarts of this little gem.
I scaled down the mixture and poured it into the prepared cylinder and started freezing and in about 45 minutes it was done and ready to eat. The booklet says to set in the freezer for a few minutes to harden more. I have never done that. I find it’s perfect the way it is.
The Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker come with a 1 ½ quart cylinder with a liquid inside the walls that freeze. When it completely frozen you won’t hear any of the liquid sloshing around in the cylinder.
There is a base that the cylinder sits on. It has a control switch. On and off. When ready you place the cylinder on the base and add the paddle that come with it and place the top on and lock. You turn on the switch and pour mixture through the hole in the top of the cover and off you go. You can pour it in before turning it on but the ice cream starts freezing and at times it makes it hard for the paddle to mix the ice cream mixture.
That is all there is to it. Only three parts of the machine. Very simple to use and you don’t have to have the need for ice, salt and have to stay outside while the ice is melting all over the place while the mixture is freezing.
The only thing that is hard about this machine is making up your mind what kind of ice creams you want.
My personal favorite is one I played with until I got it to suit me is vanilla based ice cream made from sweetened condensed milk, sliced frozen bananas, frozen strawberries and chopped nuts. Mix together and place in refrigerator until very well chilled and pour into the Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker; wait about 45 minutes and you have your own banana split ice cream or as I like to call it the Diet Buster. When using fruit make sure it's already frozen before placing in the cylinder makes for better freezing of the ice cream.
After using I wash the cylinder in cool water, dry and store in freezer and the lid fits nicely over the base and can be stored in the cabinet waiting to be used once again
I hope all of you decide that you want to try this little machine. It does what it says it will do. Make delicious ice cream every time.
