ag4hq's Full Review: Kodak EasyShare C653 Digital Camera
I received this for my birthday as an upgrade to my old 1.3MP camera. My previous camera was a Samsung Digimax, but at work we use a Kodak digital, and I was impressed with it enough to buy one for personal use. I bought the C653 on sale at Office Depot for about $115 after rebates, etc. Obviously the first thing that leapt out at me was the major improvement from 1.3MP up to 6.1MP. The pictures are much more colorful and sharp, I was blown away. Well, that could be achieved by any camera, right? So what is so great about the Kodak?
Things I like so far are the size of the LCD, it is very easy on my eyes. It also seems to keep up with what I am aiming the camera at. The focus and zoom are quick, much quicker than my old Samsung. It is a little small, but not too small. It is the right size to slip into an overnight bag but not so small it gets lost. I also like the "review" button on the back of the camera. My Samsung required me to go into the menu, find the list of photos, pull them up, then delete the ones I did not want. With the Kodak C653, I just push "review" and my pics come up, and then I hit "delete" on the ones I don't want. I like the fact that the lens retracts into the camera body and the lens cap is built in. My old Samsung lens just sort of "hung out there" and was always getting fingerprints on it or getting bumped.
There are a few things I don't like about the camera, but they are minor. The biggest one for me is that the SD card slot is up against the batteries. This means that each time you open the camera to take out the SD card, you are also popping out the batteries. After a few times you get used to this and learn to hold the camera upside down so the batteries don't fly out, but the first time or two I was annoyed. It seems Kodak expects you to buy the EasyShare dock in order to never have to remove the SD card, but that was an additional $150 that I did not want to spend. Besides, I have a card reader built into my computer. Also, the C653 can record video onto the SD card. This seems like overkill to me, especially since most folks use a video camera for video. Finally, I felt Kodak should have included some sort of case to keep the camera in. My Samsung came with a case, it was nothing fancy, but Kodak forced me to spend an extra $5.99 for a camera case. Again, not a deal breaker, just an annoyance.
Overall, I recommend this camera based on price and ease of use. If you are in the market for an inexpensive camera that will give you great pics, this is one to consider.
