I am constantly on the hunt for products for my hair. I have very fine stick straight hair. I have a lot of hair, but it is fine and soft with absolutely no lift or body whatsoever. I have tried countless products to add volume to my flat lifeless tresses. Buying tons of products can get expensive, especially if they don’t work. So I begin doing a little research and emailing companies requesting information and samples. Many companies were unwilling to help, but Kenra responded by sending information as well as generous samples of 4 of their volumizing products. One of the products I received was Kenra Thickening Spray.
About the Product
From the website:
Thickens individual strands for increased volume.
Lightweight spray uses Proteins, Panthenol, and other thickening agents to penetrate hair to increase each strand’s diameter.
On a scale of 0-20, the hold level is a 4.
Basically Kenra Thickening Spray is exactly what it sounds like. It is a spray designed to thicken individual hairs and improve the overall thickness of hair.
Packaging and Price
Like all Kenra products, Thickening Spray comes in the standard gray bottle. It works very much like hairspray. I only had a 1.95 oz. trial size, but the original is a full 8 oz. I can’t comment on the full size packaging, but my trial size bottle looked exactly like a pump bottle of hairspray. The little clear cap covered the spray pump dispenser. The gray bottle has simple black writing. The packaging is basic, but not cheap.
This 8 oz. bottle will cost around $13. The Kenra website did not have a price listed, but looking around the Internet, I found several prices- some more, some less than $13. This just seems to be the average. If you are interested in purchasing Kenra products, search around online or check with your local salon.
My Experience
To use this product, simply spray generously all over damp hair and then style as usual.
So I did just that. After my shower, I towel dried my hair, got dressed, and then went to style my hair. I combed out my hair and sprayed a decent amount of spray all over my hair. I didn’t drown my hair, but sure to apply enough so all my hair was covered. As I was spraying I didn't notice much of a scent, but when I sniffed the contents of the bottle, it had a light pleasing fragrance.
Then I styled my hair as usual. I always blow dry my hair and use a large round brush to get maximum lift and volume out of my style. I just got my hair cut about a month ago. I had used the spray before I got my hair cut, but after my hair was cut into a fresh new style, I was really expecting some good results.
After my hair was styled, I took a good look at my do. Hmm, nothing too different. If anything, my hair looked more frizzy, but not thick and healthy. Frizzy hair isn’t exactly in. I felt my hair expecting to feel the thick strands I was promised. My hair felt as if I had just sprayed hair spray in my hair before drying it. My hair felt coated and slightly stiff. My hair is very fine and I’m used to it being very very soft and swingy. This dry coarseness was something different.
I wasn’t too sure about the change in texture and feel, but kept using the product. Finally one night, my boyfriend asked what I was putting in my hair. I explained to him what it was and he said he understood, but didn’t like it because it hurt him. I had been resting my head on his bare chest while we were watching t.v. and my coarse, newly textured hair felt prickly and scratchy against his skin. Not exactly what I want in a hair product.
I have quit using Kenra Thickening Spray on a daily basis. I still have quite a bit of my bottle left even though it was a trial size. This stuff lasts a while which I’m not sure is a good thing. I have used it a few times recently and have discovered that this spray is a great texturizer for when I am pulling my hair up. Those of you with fine hair probably have had the experience of barrettes and clips just sliding out of your smooth, skin strands of hair. This happens to me all the time and drives me crazy. With Kenra Thickening Spray, I can thicken and add texture to my hair when I pull it up. I spray it only on the hair I’m pulling up and it helps it stay up better. I also have tried using less of the product in my hair, but then it doesn’t really thicken. The hairs that were coated feel stiffer than my normal soft hairs.
Ingredients
Kenra does not use any animal products in their ingredients and none of their ingredients are tested on animals. I recently learned that if a product says “product not tested on animals”, it just means the completed product was not tested. The individual ingredients still may have been tested on animals. Kenra does not test anything (ingredients or products) on animals.
Extracts of chamomile, rosemary, lavender, sage, nettle, lemon balm, birch, horse chestnuts and horsetail in purified water, polyquaternium-11, PVP/VA copolymer, hydrolyzed wheat protein, panthenol, dimethicone copolymer, octoxynol 13, polysorbate-20, fragrance, citric acid, methylparaben, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, bezophenome-4
Final Thoughts
Overall, I don’t recommend Kenra Thickening Spray because it doesn’t work well on a daily basis. It did thicken individual hairs as promised, but it coated each strand and left my hair feeling not thick, but coarse and dry. It works well to add texture on a limited basis, but there are cheaper products available. I wish it could somehow plump up each strand without sacrificing the softness of my hair.
