| mkosak's Full Review: Jenga |
From the time I can remember seeing Jenga advertised on television, I never felt the urge to run out and buy it. I guess a big part of why is because my brothers, sister and I never owned Jenga. Normally, the games I buy for my kids are board games. Why? Probably because that's what my mother did. Dahh!
To be honest, many times that's been a mistake, because the kids weren't always ready (developmentally) to play the same game. I've stuck to the standards: Monopoly, Scrabble and Parchese. When they were small I bought Don't Break the Ice, Last Straw and Don't Spill the Beans. The kids enjoyed all of those games.
My middle son has been diagnosed with dysgraphia (crummy handwriting) and ADD. The school district we're in provides therapy for children with dysgraphia. I was surprised to learn that one of the things she does with him is play Jenga. This game is great for kids with ADD because it helps them in their concentration skills. It also helps children develop their fine motor skills, thus helping children with dysgraphia.
Just before Christmas, the occupational therapist suggested I purchase Jenga for my son. I took her advice and I'm glad I did. The game was a hit in our house! All three of my boys love it and are able to play it together. My middle son (age 11) and youngest son (age 7) enjoy playing it. This is a game they both have an equal chance of winning and so it's more enjoyable for them. My youngest son tends to get upset playing games with his two big brothers, because they always win.
The blocks of the Jenga set I purchased Christmastime at Toys-R-Us were colored (red, yellow and blue). The price of the Jenga set with unpainted blocks was $2 more. I paid $9.59 for the set as opposed to $11.59 for the other. Just thought I'd mention the difference for anyone out there who likes shopping around.
