Like the game of "Operation"...for grown-ups!

When you look at the landscape of games on the market, there are many that are fun. At the same time, it is hard to find a game that actually involves physical skill and cool nerves. The closest example that I can think of is strictly for kids: Operation. Operation requires a steady hand, cool nerves, and skillful work with tweezers to achieve success. There is an adult game that requires the same kind of dexterity that Operation calls for. That game is Jenga.
Jenga is a really nifty game that can be enjoyed by older children and adults alike. The way the game is played is pretty simple. You have a plastic guide that is in a ninety-degree angle. Inside this triangular apparatus you stack a number of rectangular wooden blocks. The result is a tower of wooden blocks that easily stands on its’ own. This is where the fun starts. Each player takes turns removing a block from the middle of the tower. The goal is successfully remove the block without having the tower fall. It takes steady hands, the mind of an engineer, and the heart of a daredevil to play this game.
Jenga is one of those games that really test the player. If you have shaky hands, you have to learn to control those nerves to succeed at Jenga. The players have to really think, and plan their moves carefully. It is not as simple as just pulling out a block. To really play Jenga the way it is intended requires thought. You have to consider the ramifications of your move and how it will affect the other blocks around it. Parents, this is a good way to teach your young teens about their decisions in life – each move may have effects that you do not anticipate. (Granted, that is a bit of a heavy lesson to associate with Jenga, but it just might get through to your kids)
Playing Jenga is a lot like playing golf. You may play the same course many times, but each round is different than any you have played before. Jenga is the same way. No matter how many times you have played, you will find that the game is different than any other time you have played. There is no guarantee that any two moves will turn out the same. Each move (just as each golf shot) stands alone in this game. If you are someone who likes a challenge, loves thinking games, and considers yourself cool under pressure, Jenga is definitely the game for you.
