| JennJoy's Full Review: Into The Sun - Dixie Witch Movies |
NB: Deaser26 seems to think I like devil rock, so Im back with another stoner rock/metal review for his and your pleasure. You know you love it!
Dixie Witch is a trio out of Denton, Texas that have only been together since 1999. In that short time theyve signed a deal with Brainticket Records, released their debut album, and played tons of shows with notables like Spirit Caravan, Alabama Thunder Pussy, and Reverend Horton Heat. The band is also unique due to their drummer/singer combo that isnt often found in any genre. The group consists of Trinidad Leal (drums, vocals), Clayton Mills (guitar), and Curt Christenson (bass).
Into the Sun is a great first album full of fuzzed out guitar and double bass drums. These guys really pay homage to their 70s forefathers while maintaining a contemporary edge. The trio creates a full sound that slightly tinges on southern rock, but with a much harder approach. Nothing on Into the Sun is particularly groundbreaking, but its completely solid. Just one listen lets you know that these guys work hard and totally love what they do. They are just real guys making really good music.
The first song here is the title track and its packed with thick grooves. Trinidads vocals are superbhe has a great voice with just the right mix of grit and attitude. I think this is particularly significant when you consider many of the vocals in similar bands are impossible to understand or just sound horrible. CC is more of the same style of crunchy hard rock complete with some amazing riffs and lyrics that would do any old school rocker proud. CC also has a great spacey section in the middle of the song thats a fantastic buffer for the ear-drum blowing sonics of the rest of the tune. Freewheel Rollin takes it down a notch for a twelve minute jam session thats just dripping with smoky, greasy, blues-inspired rock. Theres also a magnificent cover of Joe Walshs The Bomber which Dixie Witch tear it up on and show their ability in a variety of styles.
If everything you listen to has to be hipper-than-thou I imagine Dixie Witch isnt for you. However, if you are interested in genuine rock n roll with lots of energy these guys will be right up your alley. Dixie Witch has the strength and drive to play damn good music without all the posing and posturing common in rock. I have mad respect for any group that plays simply because they have passion for it because it really comes through in their music. This band puts the power in power-trio and does it all with a little Southern flair.
