Pros: Tiny size fits smaller newborns; waistband folds down; cute design.
Cons: More expensive than the "size 1's", no cut-out area at waistband for umbilical cord stump.
The Bottom Line: If you are expecting an average to large sized baby, skipping Huggies Newborn Diapers altogether and going straight to "size 1" would be the wisest choice.

| melissasrn's Full Review: Huggies Newborn Diapers |
At the hospital where my now 14 month old son, Tristan, was born, Huggies Newborn Diapers became the first ones ever used to cover his (not so tiny) bottom. Weighing in at a whopping 9 pounds and 5 ounces, he came close to exceeding the maximum weight recommendation of 10 pounds these diapers are designed for right from the very beginning. Of course, as I was stocking up on clothing and other newborn items during me pregnancy , I knew better than to purchase diapers in this size as they'd most likely be a waste of money for the large birth weight babies I tended to carry. But my grandmother saw things differently. One of the gifts I received from her at Tristan's baby shower was a package of these same Huggies Newborn Diapers. I'd certainly have to use those FIRST before Tristan gained any more weight if I wanted to use them at all. How cute and tiny they were! Looking back now, it's certainly hard to believe that my baby was ever small enough to fit into these diapers that a doll could easily wear.
THE PRODUCT
Huggies Newborn Diapers are designed for babies up to 10 pounds in weight. Because of their tiny size, they tend to fit a smaller baby's bottom better than regular "Size 1" diapers do, which are, in general, made to fit larger babies weighing 8 to 14 pounds. On the outside, Huggies Newborn Diapers are made of a soft cloth-like material that is very gentle on a new baby's tender skin, and have cute little "insect character" designs printed across the front. The "fold down" waist band is a somewhat useful feature that helps to protect a newborns umbilical area as this area heals. On the sides of these thin newborn diapers are stretchy velcro tabs that help to ensure a more comfortable and secure fit. And the "leak lock" system found in Huggies Newborn Diapers is designed to quickly pull moisture away from baby's sensitive skin and into the absorbent core located inside.
PACKAGING AND PRICE
Currently, each package of Huggies Newborn Diapers contain a 48 count and can be purchased online at stores such as drugstore.com for a ridiculous price of $14.99. I have no doubts that these diapers can be found for significantly less at most major discount stores, such as Wal-Mart, if price is a concern as it is for most new parents. And for the same price, consider choosing a 68 count jumbo package of Huggies Ultratrim Diapers in "size 1" instead as you'll get many MORE diapers for the money. The "size 1's" truly are only slightly bigger, and their waistbands fold down just as easily as those found on the "newborn" size do. So unless you have a 5 or 6 pounder, Huggies Newborn Diapers are not very practical for most babies. In my opinion, they are just one more marketing ploy aimed at expectant parents to get their money. For there truly isn't anything special about them, other than the slightly smaller size, that can't be found by purchasing the less expensive Huggies Ultratrim Diapers in "size 1" as an alternative. So if you still feel that these are a "must have" product for your newborn, I'd suggest using coupons to help off-set the higher cost. Or better yet: place these diapers on your baby shower registry "wish list" and let your friends and family purchase them for you.
MY EXPERIENCE
During Tristan's first two weeks of life, we diapered his precious new behind with Huggies Newborn Diapers until what we had on hand were all gone. Those last few days of use, I easily noticed that he was quickly outgrowing them and was ready to move on to the next size ASAP. And because Tristan was exclusively breastfed in those days, these diapers went VERY quickly as frequent bowel movements were an everyday (and night!) occurrence. Unfortunately, we had several "diaper blowouts" using Huggies Newborn Diapers which only added to the mountains of laundry that were already piled in front of us. The stretchy velcro tabs were defective on a few as well, so overall, we were NOT impressed with the quality and performance we found when using Huggies Newborn Diapers for such a short period of time. If they were not a gift, I would definitely have been upset at the amount of money that was wasted on such an unnecessary purchase.
OVERALL RECOMMENDATION
Unless you are expecting a small to average sized baby, skip purchasing Huggies Newborn Diapers altogether and go straight to the "Size 1" of your favorite brand as the most practical and economical choice. However, when purchasing a newborn diaper IS necessary for smaller birth weight babies, I'd recommend checking out the Pampers brand first as they truly are different from those than can be purchased in their "Size 1" of Pampers Premium or Pampers Baby Dry. Whereas the waist bands on the Huggies Newborn Diapers only fold down (which can very easily fold back up again!), the special design found on Pampers newborn diapers actually have a rounded notch cut out of the waist band instead. This unique feature helps to protect the umbilical cord stump as it heals (leaving it uncovered to keep this area dry), decreasing both irritation from constant rubbing by the diaper and the risk of infection from potential urine or fecal contamination. So my suggestion is that wise consumers leave Huggies Newborn Diapers on the shelf. They perform poorly and certainly did NOT live up to my expectations.
