I grabbed a few jars of Heinz baby food because I had a coupon. "All baby food is the same," I thought. At at first glance, they are the same as other brands (particularly my regular brand, Gerber). Same sizes, same menu choices (individual fruits and vegetables, fruit blends, fruit and cereal combos, vegetable blends, “meals,” and nasty, pasty-looking meats), but a slightly lower price – how could I go wrong? But I was wrong.
When I opened the Heinz bananas, the texture seemed different than the Gerber bananas I usually buy. So I read the label and found that the Heinz bananas not only had tapioca added as a filler (if I wanted to feed my baby cereal I'd give her cereal, not a jar of bananas!) but also had added sugar! Babies don't need added sugar, and why would you need to sweeten bananas anyway, unless you were using underripe fruit? Now I know why the Heinz foods cost less than Gerber -- I guess tapioca, green bananas, and a little sugar are cheaper than ripe bananas!
I checked my other Heinz bargains more carefully and found that not only did some of the fruits contain fillers and sugar, but some of the "meals" included ingredients that my pediatrician said should be avoided in the first year, such as tomatoes and eggs. I also found that the “meals” were much chunkier than other brands; for example, a chicken and rice dinner contained some whole small peas and grains of rice (which are not large pieces of food, but may be too much for a baby who’s transitioning from completely pureed foods).
I continued to buy Heinz food over the next few months, being careful to read the label before tossing it in my cart and avoiding those with unnecessary fillers and added sugar. Most of the options had a similar texture, smell, and taste (though I’ll admit I didn’t taste all of them) to other brands, and my daughter liked the Heinz fruits and vegetables (but not the “meals’) as much as any other baby food. So I would still recommend Heinz baby food. Just be sure to read the label first.
