| blindsider's Full Review: Heaven's A Lie [single] - Lacuna Coil Movies |
About two years ago, I met an interesting Italian girl. Due to our common interests -- specifically the fact that we're both music-obsessed freaks -- we quickly became friends, regardless of the fact that she only knew a limited amount of English. As I was prying her with questions about various bands, a lightbulb went off in my head. The conversation went something like this:
ME: "Hey! Do you like Lacuna Coil? They're Italian."
HER: "Uh...Lacuna Coil?"
ME: "Yeah. I love 'em. They have one female singer and one male singer."
HER: "Sheets music," she says, laughing.
ME: "Oh..." She reads sheet music?
HER: "Sorry for my use of bad language, Sheila."
ME: "Huh? Bad language?"
HER: "Sheets..."
ME: "AH! Shit music. You don't like them?"
HER: She shakes her head dramatically.
Well, I guess my new friend couldn't be perfect.
Seriously though, I can't even fathom the concept of loathing Lacuna Coil's music. It's way too beautiful. After seeing them as the opening act for P.O.D. in the spring of 2004, I was hooked. There was no turning back. I checked out all of their albums, and it simply wasn't enough. When I was in this bizarre shop with loads of tie-dyed clothing and old movie memorabilia, I noticed a tiny music section with imports and random albums from lesser-known bands. Lacuna Coil's Heaven's A Lie single was right there in front of me for only $6.
Obviously, I couldn't resist. Sure, this single features two tracks from Comalies, LC's 2002 album that I already own. But there was a catch in the form of a B-Side, the rarity known as "Lost Lullaby". True to its name, this song got lost in Lacuna Coil's Unleashed Memories recording sessions and never found its way onto one of their albums. Granted, it appeared on the German Deluxe Edition of Comalies -- but I wasn't about to shell out $30 for one extra song. This relatively cheap single had my name written all over it.
1. Heaven's A Lie
2. Self Deception
3. Lost Lullaby
Although the song's title may raise a few eyebrows, Lacuna Coil's vocalists Cristina Scabbia and Andy Ferro have repeatedly insisted that "Heaven's A Lie" is not an anti-Christianity song. The lyrics aren't even referring to Heaven in a literal sense. It's more of a reference to the fact that nothing in reality is entirely perfect, and that life isn't always butterscotch lollipops and dandelions. I interpret it as speaking specifically about a romantic relationship that is smothering and pretentious.
"Heaven's A Lie" is one of Lacuna Coil's most popular songs to date. It was the first single released from Comalies, and I will continually applaud that choice -- it's one of the disc's most spectacular tunes. Its serene introduction soon bursts into an explosion of loud, crashing guitars. Once Cristina starts singing, it's hard not to be completely enchanted. Her voice is outstanding. "Something wrong with every plan of my life / I didn't realize that you've been here / Dolefully desired...destiny of a lie," she wails furiously. Andy brings his trademark growly shouts to the song's incredibly catchy chorus.
"Self Deception", which is also featured on Comalies, is slightly faster and heavier than its predecessor. Rumors ran rampant that this would eventually be released as a single, but unfortunately, none of those whisperings were based on truth. Andy's raspy vocals are more dominant here, as he chants his way through the enrapturing verses. Cristina takes over for the bridge and stunning chorus, which is complete with one of her most undeniably addictive vocal hooks ever -- "Ooh, I don't know what to do / No guilt is in my heart / I don't know what to do, I'm not the reason."
Every time I talk to a Lacuna Coil fan about "Lost Lullaby", they always mention how much they think Cristina sounds like Dolores from The Cranberries. I definitely can see the resemblance in this five-minute midpaced ballad -- she explores her lower vocal range, which is both a blessing and a curse. While I love the song's lush melodies and Criz Mozzati's superb drumming, the redundancy kills it. Repetitive lyrics will probably always be Lacuna Coil's only flaw in my eyes, and as Cristina trills, "I don't wanna please you forever / Oh, ah, oh ah" dozens and dozens of times, I find myself wincing. She sounds wonderful, the band sounds wonderful, but it'd be much nicer if this song didn't swim in such unforgivable monotony.
Heaven's A Lie is a terrific single from Italy's finest metal band. It's quite rare, sure, but is it completely necessary? Considering that two out of the single's three songs are already on Comalies, I'll recommend this only for hardcore Lacuna Coil fans who love collecting everything by the band. The inclusion of "Lost Lullaby" is definitely a nice treat, even if I don't consider it one of the band's most spectacular moments. Even the single's artwork is beautiful.
And it's totally not sheets music.
