If price is your main consideration when shopping for a high chair, put the Grayco Easy Chair on the top of your list. While it is one the most inexpensive high chairs available, it is among the best in the $20 - $30 price range. (See my review of the Cosco high chair in the same price range, which we also own, for a direct comparison.)
The Easy Chair has no fancy features like some of the more expensive models, but it's a great basic high chair with all the essential features. I especially like the completely enclosed molded seat, which makes it harder for a child to escape or fall out than models which are open in the front. I also love the removable vinyl seat cover. The fact that it's removable makes it easier to clean, and replacement covers are available if needed.
The chair also has a footrest, a bar on the back handy for hanging bibs or towels on, and a safety strap to go around the child's waist. The contoured seat and high back give more support to younger babies than shorter, straight-backed chairs. The tray is easy to attach or remove, but the grips are so large I doubt any child small enough to be in the high chair could remove it. The tray also has a couple of partitions. One is ideal for keeping a cup or baby food jar in place, and I have no idea what to do with the other one.
The Easy Chair is easy to assemble (took me about 10 minutes) and lightweight enough to be moved around easily if needed. Virtually everything (except the legs) is made of molded plastic, which is easy to clean and resistant to wear and tear. Our other chair is metal, and the white paint is prone to getting scratched and flaking off. The Graco chair shows no wear and tear after about a year of use. I've found that using the cleaning wipes with bleach do a great job of removing stains that a soapy cloth won't get clean.
The only drawback I can think of is that the chair doesn't fold up for storage. It would be nice, but it's a feature I can live without. When you're shopping for high chairs, think about what features you want and will use. It's easy to be impressed with all the fancy chairs in the store, but many of those added amenities aren't as practical as they are pricey. If you want a plain and simple, sturdy, secure place for baby to sit at mealtime, this chair is a great value!
Recall alert: Some of these chairs have been recalled because of a problem with the legs of the chair. Of course, if you buy a new chair, this shouldn't be a problem, but do be careful with hand-me-downs or if you're shopping consignment stores. Not all of the Easy Chair high chairs are subject to recall, so check the model number. For complete details, visit the Consumer Products Safety Commission's website at www.cpsc.gov.
