kjscrafts's Full Review: Go Diego Go: Safari Rescue for DS
This is a fun easy to play Nintendo DS game for preschoolers, especially if they are into animals and/or the Go, Diego, Go! Nick Jr. show. The game is kind of limited in game play depth, but as a game for young kids it is nice that it is limited and does not get them too addicted to wanting to keep playing the game non-stop. It is, however, also not one of those limited play depth games that kids are likely to want to come back to after playing through. Thus I do recommend it as a fun game for young kids to play, but only if you rent it.
In the game the two main modes are Start a Safari or Play Any Game. The safari mode is the most fun because it has a small story line to go along with the mini games, which appear in the same order in the Play Any Game mode just without the story line in between and the option to jump around to play your favorite ones.
On the Safari you help Diego find a magical drum and in the end use it to turn the stone elephants back to real elephants. The safari is mostly in cave and out on the savannah. In this mode you move Diego around with the arrow keys to navigate through the areas. As you go you run into obstacles, which leads to the mini games. Also, along the way you also try to spot different animals and take photos of them to complete your Safari Book. This photographing the animals feature is one of my favorite aspects of the game, but most probably will find it the most boring, however, seeing the safari book complete is still cool (and easy for those that keep an eye out for the camera icon to appear on the screen every time you are near an animal).
In the game there are a total of 25 mini games, but many repeat each other in style and some are pretty much identical. There are a total of 8 different kinds of games. This includes two you Say Jambo in, four you blow into microphone, four you drag obstacles out of Diegos way, four you guide Diego around and over obstacles, five you play the drum in, three you choose a hiding spot in, two you tap icons on the screen in, and one you photograph the magician in.
What you have to do in each game is pretty simple, although you do need the volume on the DS on to hear Diego give instructions, which can get annoying for parents or others near the kid playing the game. The controls mostly use the touch screen by having you tap symbols, tap to play drums, tap a hiding spot, or tap and drag obstacles. It also uses the DS microphone for the ones you say Jambo in and the ones you have to blow for. It does occasionally use the arrow keys in the mini games, such as for avoiding obstacles in a few of the mini games and moving around to find the magician to photograph him.
The games graphics are good DS quality graphics. They pretty well resemble Diego as he looks in the television show and the animals look somewhat realistic, although the game is kind of minimally detailed overall.
The games sound is mostly Diego talking, such as in giving instructions. It does sound like Diego in the show, but it is also kind of annoying if you are not playing the game. Thus I highly recommend this as being played with headphones, as turning the sound off is not much of an option in this game, especially the first time you play through the games.
