| jenb123's Full Review: Gerber Pinless Diaper Cover |
About two years ago, I noticed quite a few of my friends using cloth diapers on their babies. They loved them and told me that they were a lot easier than many made them out to be. I thought about making the switch after doing the math and the research. There was no Epinions to turn to back then, so I asked my friends for suggestions on pinless covers to use with the prefolds and hourglass shaped diapers they passed on to me.
My more experienced friends suggested I order some quality covers from a catalog or website, but in the meantime I had a few other options. Most discount or baby stores only carry Dappi and Gerber brand wraps, and I was told that Dappi was….well replace the "D" with a "CR" and you’ll have an accurate description.
Friends had told me that the Gerber EZ Cover was pretty much the best inexpensive wrap and most likely my only option if I wasn’t ordering from a catalog or e-tailer At about 5.99, I figured I had nothing to lose by giving them a try.
I hadn’t yet completely switched from disposable diapers and was still a bit hesitant to spend a lot on diapering items. Not yet ready to order higher priced covers before making "the switch" to cloth, I decided to buy one pinless diaper cover.
Everything you ever wanted to know about Gerber EZ Covers and then some…
These wrap style covers are made of polyester. The inner layer is mesh-like which allows for increased air circulation and helps the diaper stay in place. The outer layer is smooth and waterproof, mine features a flower print though there are also "boy prints" and plain white covers available.
The elastic at the back and legs is covered with material to minimize red marks and gussets or "leg dams" provide leak protection. The cover fastens with Velcro and there are several sizes available to help ensure a snug, secure fit:
Newborn (birth to 12 lb.)
Small (13-18 lb.)
Medium (19-26 lb.)
Large (27-34 lb.)
These covers can be used with flat, prefolds, fitted or contour diapers. Simply place the diaper, folded if necessary, in the cover and fasten with the Velcro tabs, much like a disposable diaper. A prefold folded in thirds works well, contoured diapers simply need to be placed inside the cover. Unless there is a particularly messy diaper, you can use the cover several times before washing.
Gerber EZ Covers are machine washable and can tumble dry. The tabs fold back for washing to prevent the dreaded Velcro snake. To prolong the life of your cover, I’d suggest hang drying the cover and even hand washing if possible.
Gerber EZ Covers VS other covers…
To be honest, these covers are not my first choice in diaper wraps. They aren’t the worst, they are better than cheap pull-on covers like Grandma might have used. They also are better than Dappi and Ecology Kids, the only other brands I’ve seen at local stores.
My main complaint is the lack of durability I’ve experienced with every Gerber EZ Cover I’ve used. It survives machine washing, even the dryer, but the Velcro is not securely sewn on. While most of the Velcro remains fully functional, the stitching tends to unravel after only a few machine washings. For the price, I can’t complain, but I have learned that spending an extra few dollars can get you a much better diaper cover.
My favorite cover is the Bummis Super Industrial Whisper Wrap which is much more durable and more adjustable. Another good choice is a wrap made by a WAHM, or work-at-home-mom. I like Guzhees from Dewey’z Dipes almost as much as Bummis.
My other complaints include the "plasticy," cheap feeling of the outer part of the cover. I’m not completely impressed with the fit having used other covers, but the Gerber EZ Cover is certainly better than cheaper alternatives.
Overall
For the price, Gerber EZ Covers are a decent pinless diaper cover. If you aren’t quite ready to "take the plunge" yet, these covers are generally easy to find at Target or Babies R Us. Maybe you’ve been told cloth diapering is difficult? These easy to use covers can show you just how untrue that is. No need for pins, nothing complicated.
Maybe you don’t want to invest in too many smaller sized covers that your baby will outgrow in no time. On the bright side, the medium size has fit my daughter fairly well from the time she was about 8 months old until well past her second birthday. I do know of many mothers who swear by these covers, perhaps because all babies are built differently.
While not my first choice in diaper covers, Gerber EZ Covers are good "starter" covers for those just beginning to use cloth diapers. Because they are relatively inexpensive, they are also good to have on hand as spares, to keep in the diaper bag or at Grandma’s, or to use on wash day. Definitely worth a try, though not the cream of the crop.
