Foster's Brewing CO. was founded by the Foster brothers in 1888 and it is now owned by Carlton & United Breweries, LTD., one of the world's largest brewing companies. Foster's Lager was brewed in Australia at first, but now it is brewed in Canada.
The basic attributes of Foster's Lager are very similar to other mass- produced pilsners. The color is golden and the aroma is one of cereal grains and hops, and it's somewhat metallic. The smell is unappetizing, to say the least. The foaminess is pretty good, but it falls apart quickly. The alcohol level is 5.25 percent by volume and a 12 oz. serving contains 150 calories.
Foster's Lager has a bad flavor profile. It starts sweet, but then finishes with a bitter twist that will make you grimace and cringe with every swallow. If you must drink Foster's, be sure to keep a glass of water nearby to flush your mouth of the bad taste. And remember to serve this beer ice cold. The colder the beer, the less noticeable the bad taste will be.
Foster's Lager can be drank with salty snacks. Highly salted foods do a decent job of balancing out the bitterness of the beer. I don't recommend serving Foster's Lager with anything else. It will definitely ruin the taste of good food.
This beer is promoted as an Australian beer product. We have all seen the television advertisements which feature the man with the Australian accent. These advertisements try to convince the consumer that this is an interesting, cultural product. In reality, it is just another boring pilsner and a very poor one at that. It is brewed to be similar to an American- style lager in order to ensure its acceptance and to increase sales. But aside from the fact that it was once brewed in Australia, there is really no other connection between Foster's Lager and the land down under. Australians don't even drink Foster's products. Even they know it's a sub- par product.
If you know anyone from Australia, ask them what they think of Foster's Lager. They will tell you that it's "Australian for Yeecchhhhh"!
