| benha's Full Review: Filson Oil Finish Double Tin Pants |
If you spend much time outside under harsh conditions, you're probably on the lookout for a better pair of pants. The biggest problem I used to have was that two of my major requirements were often in direct conflict with each other. I could find pants which were rugged, and I could find pants which kept me dry. But there're precious few options when it comes to doing both.
I humbly submit that I've finally discovered the best solution to this problem, and that it comes in the form of Filson's Double Tin, Oil Finish Pants.
The heavy canvas they're constructed of is nearly bulletproof, and if that weren't enough, you get two layers of it in the important spots. Even better is that they've taken that heavy canvas and treated it with an oil finish which keeps you 100% dry inside.
I've used mine extensively for hunting and fourwheeling and think nothing of sliding down a wet, rough slope on my backside if the situation calls for it. I stay dry and the cloth hardly notices the abuse.
The same pants are available in a single tin version (single layer) and in a dry version (no oil).
If you get these, I suggest you get them a little bigger than you might normally buy and get a pair of suspenders (the pants come with buttons). Think of them as an overgarment. You're usually going to want to wear at least a light pair of long underwear underneath.
The one caution I want to make here is that you should *never* wash oil finish garments as it removes the oil. Yep, they'll get muddy and whatnot, but over time you'll come to see it as a fine patina on a great garment.
Filson's been making quality stuff for loggers and miners in the Pacific North West for just about ever. This is the original gear, not some whacko 90s tech solution to a problem that was solved (better) with a low-tech method a long time ago.
I've never owned a single article of "tech" type clothing that kept me as dry as any of the oilskin stuff I own (from Filson or otherwise). It's a better solution to the problem.
