| Magick1's Full Review: Fiber One Oats and Chocolate Chewy Bars |
I look for decent ways to get more fiber for myself and occasionally for my daughter. We try to regularly eat at home and try to ensure that we are getting good fiber from vegetables and fruits. But, with our crazy schedules, karate classes 3 nights a week and other errands, it gets difficult sometimes. One day a co-worker introduced me to the Fiber One Oats & Chocolate chewy bar a few months back. I fell in love! This allowed me 35% of my daily value of fiber and tasted just like a candy bar!
Wow, thats pretty awesome, right? Well, its a little better than some candy bars out on the market in ways. But, the redeeming factor, I think, is the amount of fiber, as most candy bars provide you nothing but sugars and empty calories. This, at least, provides some benefit and tastes great too! There are a lot of studies out there that Americans are not getting enough fiber in their diets. Have you noticed how many commercials are out there for fiber pills, mix in products and other things? This is one of these products, and if you have to use them, at least they taste good!
The Product
The bar is 4 inches long, 1 ¼ inches wide and ½ an inch thick. When you open up the package, I think you will be surprised by the amount of chocolate chips that you see covering the bar and the chocolate streaking across the top of the bar. It appears to be 2 types of chocolate. But, the drizzled looking chocolate could be chicory root extract, as it has a sweeter flavor, like chocolate and a little hint of caramel. The stream of chocolate (or chicory root extract) drizzled along the top looks like a milk chocolate and the chocolate chips appear to be darker in color so they might have more cocoa in the chips. I am not sure.
This is a typical looking chewy, granola-type bar otherwise. You can see oats, crisped rice and the appearance is very appetizing! This is supposed to be a chewy granola bar. I find that it is chewy and not hard like the typical granola bars that are crunchy! But, dont get me wrong, the crunch of the oats and the crisped rice is there!
The flavor is very nice. Honestly, if you need a sweet tooth fix, this is just like a candy bar in flavor, truly! I was surprised at how delicious it was. I felt bad eating it, thinking I was eating candy. But, I was getting extra fiber in my diet and it wasnt completely terrible in calories, fat, and other things.
The box that we purchase is from the warehouse store and we get plenty of these bars in a box. All of the bars are individually wrapped making them easy to store in an emergency kit in your house (for bad weather), in the car (but they chocolate chips will melt if hot) or to grab for a quite bit on the road running between sports, chores, errands or whatever! You can even take some into work and store them in your desk. They appear to have a decent shelf life. I just purchased a couple of boxes of these a couple of weeks ago and the expiration date stamped on the wrapper shows 09SEP08.

Overall Impressions
I truly enjoy the flavor of these chewy bars. I also love that they have 35% of your daily intake of fiber in 1 bar! The flavor and the amount of calories is acceptable to me, as when I have a sweet tooth, I find this bar satisfies my sweet tooth nicely without being completely empty calories. I am getting a little bit of value (in fiber) from these bars!
The easy portability and the price make these bars terrific for our on the go lifestyle. My daughter still gets grumpy if she hasnt had a snack between lunch and dinner, especially if dinner is late due to karate class. Therefore, I will let her choose different snacks and occasionally give this option to her so she feels like she is getting a treat (rather than just fruit or vegetables like I normally do).
If you are looking for a delicious way to curb a sweet tooth and can use a bit more fiber in your daily diet, this might be a decent, tasty option to try. I know that I was pleasantly surprised when one of the VPs at my work place dropped one off at my desk to try!
