Did you know that the Little Bear series is about 40 years old?? I didn't! I thought the cartoon was it's first manifestation as I didn't recall hearing the stories in my own youth.
"Father Bear Comes Home" was originally published in 1959. It is a gentle and heartwarming book - broken into 4 chapters (each a story in itself). The illustrations are done in charming earthy pastel tones.
Little Bear and Owl
Father Bear had to go off on a fishing trip. And while he is off at work Little Bear h as to pitch in and catch a fish for dinner. He and his friend Owl entertain themselves with their imaginings which makes the work go by quickly.
Father Bear Comes Home
Little Bear is so excited about his father coming home that he begins spinning some tall tales to his friends. What will happen when they don't come to pass?
Hiccups
Little Bear has a bad case of hiccups and his friends are giving him various cures. Which one will finally work?
Little Bear's Mermaid
While picnicing on the beach Little Bear and friends play a game of "What if?" with Mother and Father Bear. What a delightful way to end Father's homecoming day.

This book makes use of simple language earning it the right to call itself an "I Can Read Book". As such, it is a perfect book to read with your youngster as they begin to recognise the printed word. This is also a perfect book to read when a child has to be seperated from one or both parents.
What I especially like about this book are the gentle lessons it shares:
-- that moms (or dads) need kids to pitch in from time to time
-- that sometimes dads (or moms) have to travel on business
-- that imagining can be fun - but you must remember what is pretend and what is real
-- that the world is a safe and warm and loving place (or at least it should be)
All in all this makes a fine gift for any youngster, whether they love the animated series on Nick Jr. or have never seen it.
