| blackrose4eva's Full Review: Fancy Feast Cat Food |
Now, I don't have a cat yet, so I haven't tried feeding almost every kind of Whiskers or Fancy Feast to the cats in the animal shelter that I volunteer at.
But from personal experience, I can tell you Fancy Feast cat food or "wet food" is a good product.
How so? For one, although the can is small--and cute--, it is not half empty like you would find in a bag of chips. And they are pretty cheap, about 35 cents or so.
Secondly, as the one in charge of taking care and bringing ill cats back to health, I must make sure the sick animal is well hydrated and eaten.
Unfortunately, cats are not like dogs. For anyone who had medicated their pets, you know what I mean. Usually, sick dogs don't mind what you do to them, like pushing them around (not that hard), pull their ear, or even a tiny pinch. Unfortunately, for some cats, they will fight and struggle the moment you try to reach for their jaws. I literally gained at least one scar each day I came to the shelter to medicate, and it can hurt like a sh*t.
And this is the case for Jasmine, an adult white-black-gold brown female Calico. In her lifetime as a mother, she had fostered and saved three orphan kittens. After a couple of years in the shelter living with 30 other adoptable cats, Jasmine had suddenly fell ill to a cold virus. It had gotten so bad that she could not stand, very dehydrated, coughing and wheezing, and refuses to eat. We did IV fluids on her, but the rate of improvement was slow. We tried hand-feeding her--after a long 10 minutes struggle with this girl--, she still would not eat.
Medication was difficult. I had tried crushing the pills, and hide it in a can of wet food for Jasmine, and another struggle will unsue. When the food was finally forced into her mouth, she would spit it back out.
What to do? Poor Jasmine started losing pounds almost every couple of days. I really believed that she will not survive long enough to be adopted out to a good home.
Then one day, the manager brought some Fancy Feast: Tuna and Salmon. With the rest of the can food ran out, there was no choice but to give her Fancy Feast.
This time, I did not struggle with her since it's pointless. I simply put down the plate, and see what she would do.
Jasmine sniffed at the Fancy Feast (with the medication), and started eating. Although she did not eat that much, the point is, she ate.
Fancy Feast, like many other can food, it is drenged in gravy, juice and I assumed, with tasty flavor. Even the smell was great. For instance, every time I opened a can of Fancy Feast, all the cats behind me will start meowing anxiously for it. Wheras in a bag of Whiskers, the smell is a bit more faint and did not get the cats that excited.
With liquid and solid mixed together, Jasmine gain both the benefits of an appetite and hydration. After a couple of weeks of feeding Fancy Feast and pills, she finally got all better.
True story, believe it or not. I cannot scientifically proof it to you that Fancy Feast saved her life. Heck, I'm not 100% for sure.
However, I can tell you this much:
If Jasmine did not eat, she would not have saved another kitten the later month.
*Jasmine is still looking for a good home. If interested, comment on this review and I will get back to you.
*UPDATE*
Last week, poor Jasmine had been put down to sleep. She was suffering from a mysterious disease, which causes liver failure and others. She was suffering for a very long time, until now. R.I.P., sweet girl.
