| Zeira's Full Review: Executive Royal Inn West Edmonton |
We recently took a trip to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and discovered that we wanted to stay the night. We looked at different hotels and inns and finally settled on the Executive Royal Inn which wasn't too far from the West Edmonton Mall.
The first thing that sold us was the clean exterior and the parking lot. We've spent a lot of time at hotels the last few months and one of our new pet peeves is a parking lot that is too tight and run down. This one passed our inspection.
The check in was simple and easy. We only had our four year old staying the night with us so we figured that we would splurge and get a room with a king sized bed and a pull out. This was a deal at only $125 CDN.
The lobby was quite large and had a large bronze sculpture at one end of it. It had lots of seating including sofas.
We went to our room on the fourth floor. When we entered there was a large mirrored closet to our right and a ledge with a coffee maker and a selection of coffees, teas and condiments.
To our immediate left was a large bathroom with a long counter, tub and "water closet". The bathroom only had a large light over the mirror but didn't seem to give off enough light when you were in the shower.
The bathroom had a tiered holder for shampoo, conditioner, facecloths, soap, lotion and a shoe polisher. In a clear holder they also had glyceryn soap. (Apple scented!)The shower had great pressure, a feature that I appreciate.
Just outside the bathroom on the right was an alcove with a small bench and mirror.
Entering into the main area there was a couch and two comfy chairs around a coffee table. Behind one of the chairs was a end table and behind the other chair was a large hutch which concealed the TV and refrigerator.
To the left of this was a king sized bed sandwiched between two end tables. In the corner was a desk and chair.
The focal point was probably the bay window which was V shaped. Very neat. I estimated that the room was about 30 feet by 23 feet which was a pretty good size.
It had a few pictures up that were framed in matting that had been painted to look as though the picture continued on to it. Interesting touch.
My first observation was how clean the room smelled. I quickly discovered that it had an automatic air freshener over the door. I really only have two small complaints about the cleanliness of the room. The first occurred when I thought I would make some tea. When I picked up the card explaining that additional coffees and teas were $2.50 each I saw a hair stuck to the card. I immediately lost my taste for a tea and decided to have a cold pop only to find my second encounter. A dirty glass. Even though the other three were clean I couldn't drink out of them.
The room had it's own thermostat and air conditioning. Each room is equipped with it's own luggage holder, an iron and ironing board and a hair dryer. There was also one spare pillow and blanket in the closet along with eight hangers. (Yes...I counted!) A nice touch was the two large bathrobes we discovered.
The room is accessed by key card. You can see into the hall using a peep hole but it did not have a dead bolt or chain lock. Valuables could be kept at the lobby desk in their complementary safe deposit boxes.
The hotel offers internet hookups and free local phone calls as well as free voice mail. Wake up service is available. The ice machine and vending machines are located on each floor, usually not far from the elevator.
The hotel has non smoking rooms and has a no pet policy except for seeing eye dogs. The National Post was hanging in a bag on our door in the morning complements of the hotel.
The hotel has a restaurant, meeting rooms to accomodate 3-300 people and wedding facilities. It also has a health spa and fitness center. They even have massage therapy available.
The hotel has a fax machine that you can use for $1.00 plus tax per page. Dry cleaning and valet service is available, as well.
The hotel offers regular cable or you can order movies or Nintendo.
We decided after reading the room service menu that we would order. Printed on their menu was the times one could order meals. Breakfast from 7-11AM and all day fare could be ordered from 10AM until 12AM. We quickly looked at the clock. We were ok it was only 11PM. We called and were told by the other end that, unfortunately, while the cooks were still there, all the room service delivery personel were sent home.
My husband decided to go to the vending machine to get some snacks, on the way he met a room service tray being delivered with three plates on it. He was furious. He went to the front desk and received a lame excuse and was told that they would look into it.
The next morning at check out he once again informed the front desk personel about the room service. She looked surprised and said that she would look into it and handed us two cards for a continental breakfast. ( Breakfast was only being served another ten minutes.) The breakfast was free with the stay but my husband and I left without getting it. We figure that the matter was forgotten as soon as we left the doors...but was it? We were met by another hotel guest who over heard us complain about the lack of room service. He too had called at 11:15PM and was told there wasn't any room service delivery.
Unfortunately, for the hotel more than one customer checked out the next day disappointed about the room service.
I would probably stay in this hotel again if I had to as we really didn't have any big problems, although we felt that none of our concerns were addressed. The room was large and for the most part clean. Check in and out was quite quick and easy. Fortunately, there really weren't enough problems to deter us from the hotel forever.
