| scmrak's Full Review: Emsa Perfect Beaker (16-oz) |
Yesterday was bread-making day at our house (the dogs were ecstatic, of course). The recipe of choice came out of one of those cookbooks that provides recipes for three different loaf sizes, which means that while one says "1¼ C water," the next larger size says "1½ C + 2 Tbsp. water." Kind of a pain, you know? Well, it wasn't a pain for yours truly, because I happened to have an Emsa Perfect Beaker Measuring Beaker on hand. Not only is this handy two-cup measuring beaker marked in cups, it's also marked in tablespoons - making it dirt simple to hit the correct mark: fill it to 1½ cups, rotate to the tablespoons scale, and then add in two more tablespoons (or just fill to 26 tablespoons).
It's fairly rare to find something that lives up to its name, but the Perfect Beaker Measuring Beaker comes darned close. It will measure up to two cups, either dry or liquid - no big deal, since your standard Pyrex measuring cup does that. But, you can also measure in pints, ounces, tablespoons, teaspoons, and milliliters/centimeters³, all while using a single cone-shaped beaker. Scales for all six measures are arrayed around the side of the Perfect Beaker, with measurements clearly marked in bold black lettering on the side of the clear plastic beaker. On the cups scale, the beaker is marked off in multiple increments for those more complex recipes: ounces, eighth cups, and third cups. It's also great for mixing ingredients: want to mix three tablespoons of oil and three of vinegar? No problem - just pour! I use it for measuring almost anything - with the exception of flour and boiling water.
The beaker is tapered to allow precise measurements at small volume, so you can accurately measure down to one or two teaspoons (it is better for liquid). The cone-shaped beaker sits on a broad, stable base, yielding an hourglass shape that makes the cup easy to grab and hold, even with wet hands. The cone has a broad, tapered lip that lets you pour from any direction - no need for a spout.
Emsa also sells a version that has a snap-on plastic lid so you can store the cup's contents or even use it as a shaker.
At cleanup time, the sturdy polymer beaker is dishwasher-safe (top shelf), though we usually wash it in the sink since we'll probably want it again before we run the dishwasher. And it is sturdy: after six or eight years, our beaker's been dropped numerous times, has survived hundreds of trips into the dish rack, and has even made it through a couple of moves. It remains crystal clear, with every marking intact - it's truly impervious to abuse.
Want a measuring cup that can handle the measurements of almost any recipe? Want a durable cup that can take a little abuse in your kitchen without crumbling under pressure? Want a cup that's easy to use and easy to clean? No problem: you want the Emsa Perfect Beaker Measuring Beaker. Highly recommended.
