| jps246's Full Review: Ems 2800 Long Torso |
If you are looking for a solid and dependable larger sized daypack thats designed for taller people, then EMS 2800 Long Torso might be the backpack for you.
At its basic level, the EMS 2800 LT is a frameless rugsack type daypack that has a padded back panel to provide some cushioning between the back and your back and is designed for taller people who have a longer torso (or I guess a short person with a long torso but that would be kind of scary looking).
Standing at 6 foot 2 inches, I really dont think of myself as overly tall, but I have noticed that some daypacks (and backpacks for that matter) tend to ride strangely or uncomfortably on my back because they seem made to fit someone around 5 foot 9 or so. Usually the most pronounced problem with various daypacks is that the waist strap is somewhere around the middle of my stomach, instead of down around my waist.
With the EMS 2800 LT this problem in mostly alleviated because the pack is longer and the waist strap rests on my waist where it should be and the shoulder straps are also adjusted to fit a taller person. While most any longer daypack will improve the situation, the EMS 2800 LT because of its design will snugly fit those of us who are taller. The first time I put the pack on, I surprised at how comfortable the waist and shoulder straps were and how they were so much better positioned than most other daypacks.
The EMS 2800 LT fits close to your body while you are wearing it because it lacks an internal or external frame and molds to your back. It is an excellent pack for activities where you dont want your pack flapping around on your back, such as cross-country skiing or climbing. When you have got the EMS 2800 LT on, you have free arm movement and because the pack is held close to you, there is not much change in your center of gravity, so it is difficult for the pack to cause you to lose your balance. The shoulder straps are padded like the back of the pack, but the waist strap is an unpadded. In general the amount of weight you would carry in the pack would not require a padded waist strap. Empty, the EMS 2800 LT only weighs in at about 2 pounds so the pack is not adding much to the weight of the equipment or clothing that you are carrying.
Fully stuffed, the EMS 2800 LT can carry 2800 cubic inches of gear. This means that in the summertime, this pack can almost be used as a lightweight overnight backpack if you are a light packer. The sleeping bag can either be compressed inside or strapped to the outside along with a tent. There is exterior webbing on the pack that allows you to strap things on the outside and because the top of the pack flips back and forth, you can strap items in underneath the top when you have it locked down. There are also side straps to compress the pack that can be used to strap gear on the sides of the pack. In the wintertime, youll easily be able to carry jackets, extra gloves, hats, etc without any problems because of the amount of space available in the EMS 2800 LT and youll be able to lash snowshoes, poles, and ice axes on the outside with little trouble.
The EMS 2800 LT is constructed of rip-stop synthetic fabric that is able to withstand heavy outdoor use. Ive had my pack now for a few years and beyond a few scratches, some dirty and a bit of wear around the edges, there hasnt been any degradation to the pack fabric itself. Because the EMS 2800 LT is an EMS product, there is a lifetime warranty on it if the EMS 2800 LT breaks, rips or is otherwise mangled through regular use, EMS will fix it or replace it for free.
Final Thoughts
Taller hikers who are tired of daypacks with straps that ride too high or too tight should check out the EMS 2800 LT. The EMS 2800 LT offers in a single package both a lightweight daypack with plenty of storage and a ruggedly constructed pack that can stand up to even the most active users needs, while being specially designed for taller people.
