The Doctors Book Of Home Remedies, has 23 chapters and 676 pages, however pages 644 - 676 are the index. The chapters are done in alphabetical order. For those of you that may be interested in this book, but aren't sure if there is a topic in it that you are interested in, I am including all of the chapters, and what they cover at the the end of this review
I have had to use The Doctors Book Of Home Remedies so many times, that I can't imagine not having it available. I have loaned my copy out a few times, but only to people I trust to return it to me right away. Everyone that has ever borrowed my copy, has gone on to purchase a copy of their own.
A few of their tips are some that I had heard about but never considered trying and some I had never heard of. But I have found all the ones that I have tried to be reliable. I am not going to list all of the tips, just the ones that I have used, I know they work.
My children suffer from constant recurring ear infections, and using the suggestions in this book have helped us through many a long night.
These are taken directly from the book:
Take a drink. Sipping water-swallowing-triggers the muscular action that helps your eustachian tubes open and drain," says Dr.Weider. "Open tubes mean less pain.
Decongest at bedtime. Children and adults who seem to get a lot of ear infections may benefit from a dose of an over-the-counter oral decongestant right before they go to sleep. If there's fluid inside their ears waiting to haunt them, the medicine will dry it up and help them sleep.
One of my least favorite things in the world, and it always seems to happen when I am sound asleep, Hiccups!! I have a problem where I hold my breath while I sleep, and this can cause hiccups. For me hiccups are much easier to get then get rid of. My husband can just swallow, and ta-da his hiccups are gone. This does not work for me. I need a quick cure, so I can get back to sleep. I grab my handy book, and there it is, page 345 hiccup cures.
Doctor Dubois' surefire sugar cure. "One cure that I find effective is a teaspoon of sugar, swallowed dry," says Andre Dubois, M.D., a gastroenterologist in Bethesda, Maryland. "That quite often stops the hiccups in minutes. The sugar is probably acting in the mouth to modify the nervous impulses that would otherwise tell the muscles in the diaphragm to contract spasmodically," he says.
Pat's brown bagger."It's in the technique, you have to blow in and out exactly ten times, and you have to do it really hard until you're red in the face. You also have to do it fast, and you have to form a good seal around your mouth with the bag so that no air gets in. If you follow those directions exactly, the bag will work every time."
Being the mother of three children I have had to deal with teething a few times. And on more than one occasion I was out of the usual helper, the Baby Orajel. So to my trusty book I go, and behold, a few remedies to try.
Serve a tasty teether."Take a piece of cold apple and wrap it in a wet, child-size washcloth," suggests Helen Neville, a pediatric advice nurse at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, California. "Most of the standard teething rings have no flavor," she notes, "so an apple will give the baby a little more incentive to bite down and work those teeth through the gums."
Another tip in this section suggests using a dampened washcloth, but only for babies over 6 months of age. So, if you don't have an apple handy, and need a quick teether, this works great. I keep a damp wash cloth with me in a zip-lock bag, works great for little accidents, if we don't use it for teething.
Use OTCs for pain and swelling."I recommend trying the types of things most parents already keep handy for pediatric pain," says Dr.Bogert. "Usually, that would be Children's Tylenol.
I have only given you a small peek at all the valuable information found on the pages of this book. Some section's of this book also contain a paragraph called Medical Alert. In this paragraph you will be given information on the topic that will let you know if the problem you are looking up may require medical attention.
This is a medical alert posted in the section on bad breath :
Medical Alert Bad Breath May Mean Major Trouble "Persistent bad breath doesn't mean you eat too many onions. Bad breath is a sign of major gum disease", says Roger P. Levin, D.D.S., president of the Baltimore Academy of General Dentistry.
"It can also be gases and odors coming up from gastrointestinal problems," Dr.Levin says. If your halitosis hangs on more than 24 hours without an obvious cause, see your dentist or doctor.
Some diseases that can also cause bad breath include cancer, tuberculosis, syphilis, dehydration, and zinc deficiency. Some drugs, including penicillamine and lithium, can cause bad breath, too.
As you can see for yourself The Doctors Book Of Home Remedies is an informative, helpful book. With over 2,300 ways to relieve some 130 problems, this book is a great asset to any home library. I have used many more of the remedies in this book then what I told you about here. It would take more time and space then allowed. Just know that I have used this book for about 10 years now, and value it more now then ever before. Even though I did not buy this book it was still a great investment.
This book originally sold for $27.95, you can buy a copy today at Half.com for as little as $.75.
