| gatorgirlie's Full Review: Dexter SST Buck Leather Bowling Shoes Womens |
Let me state this as a qualifier before you read my review: I am a casual league bowler. I bowl anywhere from once a week certain months, to once a month. I'm starting to bowl more, and my husband and I will be joining a league soon. I decided to buy shoes since I didn't feel like spending $2.50 on rentals every time I bowl (especially since if we join a league, we'll be shelling that out twice a week), so it IS a good investment. Plus bowling alley rental shoes are none too clean, are extremely uncomfortable, and rarely fit nicely. That being said, let me review this product.
I bought the Dexter Ladies SST 5 Linen Buck Leather RH. It's retail price is around $160, but you can find it online for around $90 now since it's updated version it on the market (I got it for much less, but that's later muchacho). Dexter bowling shoes normally run true to size (not so for other bowling shoe manufacturers), and they come in whole and half sizes. It is made out of linen-cashmere buck leather and has Leather lining, and a leather foam padded tongue and collar. This shoe is truly amazing for an interesting reason -- the soles on the left shoe are interchangable. This shoe comes with 4 interchangeable soles and 4 interchangeable heels on the slide foot. This creates 16 different combinations that you can use to approach the lanes. They even include "DrySole" protective soles for when you aren't wearing them on the lane. By interchanging the heel and sole you can wear a shoe for the longest slide or the sharpest break.
These shoes are also equipped with "Good Year Performance Outsoles," (This is for maximum abrasion, durability and traction) a "PowerPivot rubber push off sole" for added traction on wood or synthetic surfaces, a firm, flat midsole for stability, and a replaceable cushion footbed.
So, had enough statistics about the shoe? Want to know how it performed? Well I have used these shoes for a total of 10 games, and I love them. They look so nice (goodbye to those awful neon rental shoes!), are so soft, and 100% comfortable to wear. They feel like you are wearing regular shoes. The little bootie they include to wear over your slide shoe is a little strange, but it's better than getting the nice sole wet when you step away from the lanes. Another great thing is when a sole or heel wears out, all you have to do is buy another sole/heel -- you don't have to buy the whole shoe.
So why did a beginning bowler like myself buy such expensive shoes? Well, for me, they weren't. My husband and I were in a pro shop (I would recommend seeing a pro shop first before buying on the internet, you never know how shoes will fit unless you try them on.. then if you don't like their prices, go online) buying a bowling ball, bag, and wrist brace for me. I was really hesitant in buying shoes because of the amount we spent on the other items, but the guy showed me these.. told me they were on clearance for $50 -- down from $150. That was still out of the ballpark, so I joked around with him. I asked him if he had said $15 instead, and he laughed.. politely stating no, he had, in fact, stated $50. The manager came out and said.. "You know, I'm in a good mood today. Have them for $15." I couldn't believe my ears.. $15 for a $150 pair of shoes? I was in buyers heaven, so of course I snapped them up. You just can't buy nice bowling shoes for that much.
It just goes to show that if you build a good rapport with your salesman and his manager, they'll cut you deals (always pays to be nice and polite!).
Being a beginning bowler, would I have bought the shoes for $50? Probably not, they are awesome shoes.. but I just don't have that kind of money to blow on BOWLING SHOES. If I was a serious bowling, however, I would definitely go for these shoes. They are of an amazing quality that surpases everything I have looked at before. I have looked all over the internet, and have read many stellar reviews for Dexter Bowling shoes -- I will definitely buy from them again.
