| msmorvay's Full Review: Desitin Diaper Rash Ointment |
After reading the review I wrote about this product in January 2000, I decided that it was past time for an update on my review of this product. Not because I have changed my mind about anything I wrote back then or because anything has changed but because I was kind of ashamed of my original one. It was way to short and didn’t give nearly enough information about the product. So here is my updated review.
I am a mommy and a home day care provider so I have diapered my fair share of bottoms. Some children almost never get rashes, and others get them the minute wetness hits their diapers. I kid you not, I had one little girl who had to be changed literally within minutes of wetting or dirtying her diaper or she would get a horrible rash. For children like this I would seriously recommend Desitin. In my opinion it is the best for clearing up severe diaper rash and is the best for a child who gets frequent rashes.
Before writing my original review along time ago I read a lot of other reviews on the product and I have to say that I agree with everyone else that Desitin is very thick and sticks to the skin like glue. It almost never all comes off with wiping. I have had paste wash more easily off of my hands than this stuff does. And I am just talking about the person who does the diapering’s hands. You can not just wash it off with water it will not budge, you have to use soap and scrub really good. As for baby you pretty much have to wait till bath time to get it all off. This just seems kind of gross to me. But I can not dispute the fact that the stuff does the trick. On the rare occasion when one of my own children would get a rash if I used Desitin their rash would be gone by the next day. But my kids do not have sensitive skin and were not prone to diaper rash.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
The maker’s of Desitin claim that it seals out wetness and germs and from the feel of the stuff I believe that it can do both of those things. Of course I think that this stuff could seal envelopes. I think I might try it on my next art project to see if will stick two pieces of construction paper together, Just kidding.
Desitin is hypoallergenic which makes it a good choice for sensitive skin. Desitin includes the following ingredients:
Vitamins A and D (provided by Norwegian cod liver oil, yum)
Lanolin
Petrolatum
Zinc Oxide
Desitin does have an odor. It is not real strong or over powering but it definitely is noticeable. It smells really clinical to me.
Desitin comes in several different sizes and in tube and jar form. Being that there are several different sizes there are of course several different prices. A 2 oz tube will run you about $3.00, and a large 16 oz jar will cost you around $12.99. There are of course a range of sizes and prices that fall in between the two above listed examples. In my opinion the price is very fair for the amount of product you get and the reliability of its use. When compared to other brands the price is competitive with those of similar nature.
There were times when my children were babies when I had to cut back on costs and I would have to buy a cheaper brand of diapers, wipes or diaper rash creams, thankfully my children were not sensitive and such changes did not affect them. It was at this time that I actually bought another diaper rash cream besides Desitin. It was Walmart’s brand called Equate. Equate was almost a dollar cheaper and worked remarkably well on my kids as well. But when I tried on the sensitive little girl I baby sat for at the time it did not work so well for her so for a child who is not sensitive I recommend Equate (Walmart's brand) it is; creamy, not sticky, goes on easily, heals normal diaper rashes, and is much cheaper than Desitin. If your child is sensitive or if the rash is severe or frequently recurring I would stick to the Desitin. It works and it is a trustable product that has been around for a long time.
Conclusion
So in conclusion I will say that this stuff works. There is no disputing that fact. It has a fair price so you are definitely not paying to much for a product that doesn’t do the job. There are of course store brands out there that are cheaper but for the sensitive child, or for a severe diaper rash you should stick with Desitin. For a child who seldom gets diaper rashes or for just has a normal run of the mill diaper rash you could probably go with a less expensive, creamier brand such as Equate.
My main complaint about the product is that it is so sticky and difficult to remove from the skin. You can irritate a babys skin just trying to remove this stuff from their little bottoms. But apparently it is this stickiness that makes the product work, because it is this stickiness that keeps the wet out and helps the diaper rash to heal faster. So I guess it is worth having a little bit of a sticky mess because the rash is what is important and not parental irritation. One way that I found to remove the ointment with out wiping over and over again with a baby wipe was to use a very soft wash cloth rinsed in very nice warm water, apply the wash rag to the child’s body where the cream is and allow it to penetrate the area for just a moment. Then you will be able to remove the cream more easily. Then make sure to dry the area completely before applying fresh cream or a clean diaper.
So do I recommend this product? Yes definitely. I see no real reason not to. Did I always and faithfully use it? No, I have found other brands that are less expensive and have worked just as well on regular diaper rashes. But I have to conclude by saying that for a very bad diaper rash or on a child that is susceptible to diaper rashes I would definitely go with the Desitin. When the problem requires the best use the best.
