Pros: convenient location, food/fuel nearby, fair rates, ground floor rooms with interior and exterior doors
Cons: outdated rooms, skimpy breakfast buffet
The Bottom Line: On balance, I'll recommend this hotel because it provides clean, comfortable and affordable rooms. But there are many alternatives along the Thruway, and one could probably do better elsewhere.

In August 1999, I stayed at the Days Inn located in Fredonia, New York. This visit was my third stay there; however, this review focuses on my experience in 1999. My general assessment of the hotel is that it's perfectly acceptable, but it doesn't quite stack up to the competition. After much thought I've decided to deem the hotel "recommended," with the caveat that one might want to explore other options before booking a room at the Fredonia Days Inn.

Our stay:
After a long day on the road, we exited the New York Thruway and made our way to the Fredonia Days Inn. The hotel is conveniently located within approximately 1/4 mile of the highway, with restaurants and gas stations nearby. Our check-in was prompt, and the rate matched what I was quoted when making the reservation (approximately $55 plus tax for two adults).
My first impression of the room was that it needed a renovation. The easy chair and (relatively small) television in our room appeared to be approximately twenty years old, which made the room feel a bit "cheap." The bathroom tiles were a 1970s-ish shade of green. Nonetheless, everything was clean and in working order. Our room, located on the ground floor, had doors to both an interior corridor and the parking lot. I appreciated the convenience of being able to park at our door while still having the security of interior corridors. (Note: some first-floor rooms' exterior doors open onto a courtyard, not the parking lot.)

Speaking of the room, if you visit the Days Inn website, you can view several photos of the hotel. The reception parking, lobby and playground photos are clearly from the Fredonia Days Inn; if you look closely at the playground photo, you can see the above-mentioned doors leading to the courtyard. Yet, the room in the photo looks much "newer" than the room we rented. I suppose it's possible that the hotel has been renovated since our stay last year, but the website says nothing about a renovation (Days Inns that have been recently remodeled usually advertise their renovation).

Our stay, continued:
The next morning, we took advantage of the hotel's free continental breakfast. The breakfast buffet is set up in what appears to have been a restaurant, although the hotel currently doesn't operate a restaurant per se (it does have a small bar). I was somewhat disappointed in that the buffet seemed skimpier than it had been during my previous visits there. Nonetheless, it saved us the time and expense of a McDonald's stop.
Check-out was quick and easy. Although we had no problems with our stay, my wife and I agreed that we'd probably try a different hotel the next time we're in the area.

Conclusions:
When traveling by car, I view a hotel as being a place to crash (no pun intended!) for the night. A clean and comfortable room, at a fair price, is all I really need, and the Fredonia Days Inn delivered. The service from the desk staff, while not remarkable, was acceptable. Nonetheless, it's nice to have modern and "fresh" surroundings; I feel that this hotel could benefit from a renovation (if it hasn't already had one since my last visit). Unless I find out that this hotel has been remodeled, I will probably try another hotel off the Thruway (and there are many from which to choose) the next time I seek accommodations in western New York state.
