| soothsayer's Full Review: Cupcake Cafe |
This little gem in Hell's Kitchen specializes in, not surprisingly, cupcakes. And each is made with tender loving care. A regular sized cupcake is $2.50, and $1.50 for a half-sized version. These cupcakes certainly are expensive, but delicious, I liked their maple walnut with maple butter frosting. It was moist on the inside with the right balance of maple and walnuts, and not excessively sweet. The maple frosting was simply delectable, and had a cute flower decorated on top.
In addition to cupcakes, the Cupcake Cafe also makes a lot of large cakes, sort of xxx xl versions of their cupcakes. They also famous for their wedding cakes that can range from interesting creativity, to sheer disbelieve (in their size). When you order a cake, they are happy to decorate them anyway you choose. Not surprisingly, they do a lot of flower decorations.
Besides cupcakes, the cafe bakes scones, donuts, pies, and other assorted cake pastries. The yeast donuts were pretty good, and fresh, the pies they had were huge, and overstuffed, just like how you would imagine a graceful old granny would make them.
Coffee at the Cupcake Cafe was sufficient, but then again, I do not drink coffee often. A cup cost the same as a cup at Starbucks. There is some seating inside, providing some respite from the hectic Ninth Avenue, and Lincoln Tunnel traffic outside. The interior looks and feels old fashioned. In reality, it is sort of run-down with a lot of bare wood and old diner style furnishings. The cafés original tin ceiling features various non-working incandescent light fixtures attached from decades past. On the lovely pink walls hang various oil paintings of local artists.
There are many mom-and-pop food specialty shops nearby in this part of Hell's Kitchen as well as a lot of good restaurants.
