Pros: Thicker than standard crayons, easily washed off most surfaces and fabrics.
Cons: They melt in your mouth AND in your hands (if you have sweaty palms).
The Bottom Line: They do what they are supposed to do (wash off easily), but don't get them wet.

My 2 1/2 year old son has a crayon fetish. He likes to get crayons, go through the box, make "naked crayons," (peel the paper off of them) and then break each one in half (he tells me, "Now I have two!") Then, he will sit down and draw with them. He draws on his paper, his books, his bench, his table, his toys...you get the picture (pun intended). Luckily, he has yet to draw on my walls (he wants to live to see age 3).
Then there's my husband. He, too, likes to draw with the crayons. He tends to press very hard when drawing with crayons, so any crayons that my son hasn't broken, hubby breaks. My husband also tends to toss a crayon in his shorts pocket if he gets interrupted while drawing - he tosses it in his pocket then goes to answer the phone, the door, etc....and he forgets to remove it from his pocket.
So, now that I have crayon on toys and in pockets, my friend Janine (ITALYE here at Epinions) introduces me to Crayola Washable Crayons (better late than never). So far, so good. I keep them separated from the standard crayons and have allowed hubby and son to only play with the washable ones for the past week or so. So far, neither my son or my husband has broken any of them...but, yes, they are all naked now (the crayons, not the guys).
Here is what I have found...the crayon marks came off of furniture very easily with a quick swipe with a damp sponge (I haven't even needed to use soap). The few crayon marks that have gotten on clothing came out in the laundry (but, I'll tell you a secret: faint crayon marks of any kind usually come out if washed in hot water). The only disaster was when I tossed my ivory colored tablecloth in the dryer with a pair of hubby's khaki shorts. Hubby had a RED Crayola Washable Crayon in the pocket. Oops...BIG oops. Several runs through the washer and dryer have not salvaged the tablecloth, although the dry cleaners were able to salvage the shorts.
I must admit, I am at fault for the dryer incident, as there is a warning on the crayon box that states: "Melted crayons may cause permanent heat-set stains. Check pockets for crayons before placing clothing in the dryer." My bad.
I tend to supervise very closely when my son is playing and wipe things up as soon as they happen. This is good because the Crayola company suggests washing the crayon marks from walls as soon as possible. So, if Danny ever gets the inclination to write on my walls - I'll be ready to wipe them off ASAP.
Crayola suggests using warm water and soap for cleaning crayon off the walls, and of course, they recommend you spot-test first to make sure your paint won't come off as well.
My only real complaint about these crayons is that they sort-of dissolve when they get wet. If my son puts one in his mouth, or if his hands are wet when he picks one up, it literally melts...and that can get quite messy. It's almost as if they are made out of a similar material as watercolor paints.
Crayola Washable Large Crayons are available in a box of 8. The regular sized washables come in a box of 16. The Crayola Washable Large Crayons are 4 inches long and 7/16 of an inch in diameter (just over 1/2 inch). They draw in bright, vibrant colors...with orange, blue, yellow, red, black, green, brown and violet coming in the box of 8.
Crayola Washable Large Crayons are Certified nontoxic by the Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) and are recommended for ages 1 and up.
For the box of 8 Crayola Washable Large Crayons, I paid $3.99, and for the box of 16 regular size Crayola Washable Crayons, I paid $1.99.
