| amyk49's Full Review: Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Gradual ... |
A year or so ago I had a run-in with some minor skin cancer from sun damage when I was growing up. Oh yeah, I HAD to have a tan, and spent, apparently, way too much time working on that tan, and now have paid the price - literally (to the surgeon). I have now become devoted to using sunscreen and staying out of the sun for extended periods. But it would be nice to not blind people with my white skin this summer, so I decided to take the plunge and try a self tanner. I've been scared to try self tanners in the past because of the possible orange color, streaking, unnatural look and the like. But I think sunless tanning has come a long way, and I'm delighted to have found Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion.
~ Product Description
Coppertone tells us on the bottle that Coppertone Endless Summer Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion is "the easy way to build and control a flawless, sunless tan. It contains a gentle tanning agent that blends with your natural skin tone so your color change is subtle, not shocking." We are further told that this lotion can be applied daily, as you would any body lotion, to build color until you reach the shade you want. This can take several applications, however.
The label adds that this sunless tanner:
- contains moisturizers and Vitamin E
- has a clean, fresh scent
- won't clog pores
- dries quickly
The directions for use say to apply to face and body as you would with a moisturizing lotion, taking care to avoid eyebrows and hair. Use less of the product on elbows, knees and heels to prevent deeper tanning in those areas. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands and nails with soap and water after application. Let the lotion dry completely before dressing. If the lotion happens to contact fabric, launder within an hour. Wait at least two hours before showering, bathing or swimming after application. Endless Summer Gradual Tan can be reapplied daily, or as needed to deepen or maintain your tan. But for best results, wait at least 8 hours between applications.
Note that this does not contain sunscreen. In fact Coppertone even has a warning on the label that this product does not protect against sunburn. Also something to note if you live in a very hot climate, you should avoid long term storage above 104 degrees.
~ Packaging
Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion comes in a 9 fl. oz. plastic bottle with a pump-top. Naturally, the bottle is a bronze color. You can find this at must drug stores, even grocery stores, for around $7.99. That's a pretty decent price, as these types of products can get really spendy.
~ Ingredients
Taken from the bottle: Water, Isohexadecane, Glycerin, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearyl Stearoyl Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 100 Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Polyethylene, Dimethicone, Fragrance, Ceteareth-20, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Diazolidinyl Urea, Dihydroxyacetone.
~ My Experience
As I mentioned, I am new to self tanners. I really didn't know what I should expect from Coppertone Gradual Tan. You should know also that I have light to medium toned skin, that does tan easily in the sun. I've heard that with some self tanners you're supposed to exfoliate first, but that wasn't mentioned in the directions for this product, so I just showered as usual. Instead of applying my regular body lotion, I applied Coppertone Gradual Tan instead.
The pump top worked fine, and the lotion itself is white with the consistency of any ordinary body lotion. Medium consistency, not runny, not overly thick. It has a light scent, fresh and slightly floral to me. I didn't notice a chemical smell at all. I smoothed it over my legs, being careful to not over apply on my knees and heels. I did apply to the tops of my feet. The lotion disappears into your skin, as would any body lotion, so you can't really tell where you've applied. I didn't worry about it much, but just tried to make sure to get behind my knees, and evenly over my feet. I also applied to my arms and shoulders. I didn't apply to my face. I wanted to see what I ended up with on my legs and arms before I tried that!
After applying my skin felt moisturized, but not greasy. There was a little stickiness for a couple minutes, but no big deal. I waited a few minutes to make sure it was completely dry and absorbed before dressing. This only took maybe two minutes. I didn't think much about it for the rest of the day. That evening, yes indeed, I could see a slight tan glow where I had applied. Very subtle and natural, but I could tell the difference. It really did look as if I had been out in the sun for a bit. I was extremely pleased with the results. It took the edge off my pale skin and gave it a subtle glow, with no streaking or unnatural color.
I washed my hands after applying, but I did notice some color around my nails. You do need to be careful to wash your hands and nails thoroughly after applying to prevent staining.
I did not reapply for three days, and yet that subtle tan remained. I reapplied again about 4 days later, and my skin became just a little shade darker. This time I tried a light application on my face as well, and it did a great job there just adding a hint of color. Coppertone Gradual Tan makes it very easy to control the shade you want. I was happy with the color after the second application, because I wasn't going for a true tan. I just wanted a little glow, like a touch of the sun. I'm sure if you applied daily you would get much darker. Actually I was surprised at how long the color lasted on my skin without reapplying. Just experiment a little bit and you'll be able to get the color you want.
~ Final Thoughts
Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion is perfect for anyone like myself who is new to sunless tanning. It is practically foolproof. I experienced no streaking or orange color, and no offensive scent. The best thing is you can gradually build a tan to the shade you want. Remember though, there is no SPF in this, so you'll need other sun protection if you're going to be out in the sun. If you've been wanting to try a sunless tanner, I heartily recommend Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion.
