rancid1993's Full Review: Cobra Speed Series Drivers
Cobra has a fairly successful history of producing drivers. I really wasn't a fan of their SZ drivers last year, but I think Cobra took a big step in the right direction with the release of the Speed Series. The Speed Series is a group of three different drivers that are engineered to fit certain types of golfers. There is a driver for mid/high handicap players, low/scratch handicap players, and even long drive competitors. I have never used the long drive one(XX Speed) but I have used the other two, X and F Speed. I found that both drivers were well designed and could add considerable distance to your drives.
The two Cobra drivers that I had the pleasure of using both had a couple things in common. I don't know if Cobra intended for this, but I felt as if I increased my clubhead speed when swinging/hitting one of the drivers. The three drivers have a little bit of an odd shape, as Cobra claims to have the face with the largest surface area, so the crown doesn’t extend as far back as some other 460cc drivers. Another trait that the two drivers shared was an extremely loud sound on impact.
The F Speed
The F Speed was designed more for golfers who need a slightly closed face to help combat a slice. Golfers who hit a slight draw or a straight ball should certainly try the F Speed out before buying to see if it causes a severe right-to-left ballflight. Despite the fact that I hit a straight ball, I preferred the F Speed to the X Speed. The F Speed promotes a higher ball flight and lower spin for greater distance. The shaft is an Aldida NV-F graphite shaft, which looks similar to the original NV. I could tell the difference between the original and the NV-F because the NV-F promotes a little higher ball than the original and doesn’t play as stiff.
The X Speed
The X Speed is geared more toward the experience player. This driver has a neutral face angle, so this could hurt someone that hits with a slice. I found the X Speed is more for a player that hits a lower ball with a little more spin for workability. Again, that hurts the player who hits a slice. The shaft on the X Speed is an Adilda NV-X, which is identical to the orange Aldida NVS. Unlike the original NVS, I found the NV-X shaft promotes a lower, more controlled ball flight than the NVS or the NV-F on the F Speed. I'm an eight handicap and preferred the F Speed to the X Speed, I just wish the F Speed was offered in a neutral face angle.
Final Thoughts
The Cobra Speed Series drivers are a good driver from Cobra. The only flaws that I found were the extremely loud PING on impact and the fact the F Speed is not available in a neutral face angle. The positives are plenty, including the large face area and the fact the club is designed to increase your clubhead speed with out changing the complexion of your swing. If you are thinking of buying one of these drivers, make sure you try both models to see which fits your game the best.
