| MagnumForce's Full Review: Cobra King Cobra Offset Woods |
My birthday just passed on August 14th (I await the millions...and millions of well wishers in the comments section), and as my birthday present, my father, being the great and fair man that he is, got me a driver to help my stupendously bad golf game.
Now see, my dad doesn't know much about golf clubs, but he did know that when I bought golf attire, I tended to go for the King Cobra brand...mainly because of the super-kewl logo. Yes, I'm a gullible child. So seeing that I liked King Cobra, but not knowing WHY, he bought this club for me.
He made a wise choice.
The driver in question is an offset King Cobra 10.5 degree 1 Wood, with an oversized tip. I absolutely loathe graphite shafts, and luckily, my dad knew this, so he hooked up a normal stainless steel one instead. I personally find graphite flexes far too much for my liking, and further compromises my already shoddy control in favour of a couple of extra yards.
But enough slagging of my game. The real question, as with any club is, "Does it help your game?"
To that, I respond with a resounding YES. The reason? The offset. By placing the club head a little further back of the shaft, it allows your hands to stay ahead of the ball at contact. When you DON'T keep your hands behind, you slice. And ladies and gentlemen, I slice like a brand new Ginsu under normal conditions.
Bad metaphor. I apologize.
Anyways, it doesn't COMPLETELY eliminate my banana slice, but I did notice an immediate difference. It felt pretty damn good actually to hit the ball fairly straight.
After the shock of hitting the ball straight passed, I noticed that I was hitting the ball further as well. I'm not gonna attribute it to the head. Instead, I think it's because I don't have to choke up on the club anymore to try and eliminate my slice, allowing me to use the full length of the driver(which in turn allows further hitting).
The club also uses some great grips. Of course, that's a very subjective call, since everyone likes different things, but the ones used for this club are soft rubber, that doesn't get slippery when wet, unlike my older clubs.
The confidence that this club inspired in me has been profound. Instead of 110, I'm now shooting 105!!!!!
OK, so I still suck.
Also, the club LOOKS good. Which we all know is the primary reason why we all play golf anyways. Dark gray, with some nice curves, and the Cobra logo used as a centering graphic.Plus, a dope head cover, with yet again the Cobra logo. Think how important you'll look with this in your bag! :)
Another factor to take into account is the price of the club. In it's stainless steel form, I've seen it priced around $200 Canadian (about $150 American). It's a steal, especially when compared to some of the titanium graphite shafted monstrosities on the market today, which can get as high as $700 in price, and might give a negligible advantage over this club.
Any flaws? Well, when compared to some other clubs, this club face might seem a touch small. I've played with Bertha's before, and they eat the sweet spot on the Cobra for lunch. Don't get me wrong, it's a large face, just not as big as others.
That's it though. This club is perfect in all other aspects, especially for a high handicap golfer who may have trouble with a slice.
Highly recommended. Especially if you get it for free.
