I first learned of this book while working with a family physician in Reno, NV, while I was a student. I enjoyed using her copy and swore to myself that I would buy a copy.
I bought a copy in the last year of medical school and I have never regretted my purchase. This book is absolutely one of the best dermatology books available today.
The author is Thomas Habif, M.D., Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Dermatology), Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, New Hampshire. The latest edition is the third edition from 1996, so I expect there will be a new edition forthcoming soon.
The inside cover of the book has a table of all the available topical steroids (circa 1996) and lists them by potency from group I to group VII (most potent to least potent). It includes brand name, percentage, generic name, and tube sizes available. What an incredible resource. All this in just the inside cover!
This book has 27 chapters and 898 pages including the index. It begins with basic skin anatomy and ends with dermatologic surgical technique. In between the first chapter and the last, it covers topical therapies and just about any dermatologic disease you could think of.
The pictures are very vivid (and probably graphic to someone not in the medical field). Each picture is accompanied by an explanation of the disease, pathophysiology (if known), and treatment options.
What exactly is herpes (pemphigus) gestationis? I can tell you because I had a patient who had this and I studied it in this book.
What about Poikiloderma vasculare atrophicans? You can read about it in this book!
What do I do to treat Lyme disease? Now you will know!
I use this book frequently to help me diagnose rashes or skin lesions when I am not certain, or to look up treatments when I know the disease, but not what to do with it. This is a book that will stay in my library for life and I feel I will always keep an up to date copy of this around.
However, if you don't want to spend $135, or you don't see a lot of dermatologic problems, you may just want to use it at the hospital library.
Thanks for reading my review.
