OUCH
Back in May, I started experiencing pain every time I would put pressure on my foot. When I looked to see what was causing the pain I noticed a flat hard mound on the bottom of my foot. I remembered stepping on something at the beach and thought it was from that. I told myself to give it time and it would feel better. Two weeks later when it was still hurting, I decided to ask my doctor to look at it while I was in his office for a follow up on my rotator cuff injury. He told me it was a plantar wart and said he would refer me to a Podiatrist.
It is sad to say, patience has never been a virtue of mine. When the Podiatrist’s office called and said it would be over a month before they could get me in, I made the appointment all the time knowing there was no way I could wait that long to begin treatment. I enjoy running and walks on the beach and because of this wart, I was not longer able to enjoy these activities without a lot of pain. As soon as I hung up with the appointment clerk, I headed out the door to my nearest drug store.
OH MY, NOT MUCH OF A CHOICE
I thought I would find a large selection of products to have to choose from; however, that was not the case. They had at least four or five different brands of regular wart removers, but only Dr. Scholl’s® Clear Away® Plantar Wart Remover System and Dr. Scholl’s Clear Away® One-Step Plantar Wart Remover System to treat and remove plantar warts. I decided to go with the Clear Away® Plantar Wart Removal System, because you got more discs and cushioning pads with this system.
DR. SCHOLL’S® CLEAR AWAY® PLANTAR WART REMOVER SYSTEM FOR FEET
In the Dr. Scholl’s® Clear Away® Plantar Wart Remover System for Feet you will find 24 medicated discs and 24 cushioning pads. The Active Ingredient for this system is Salicylic Acid, so each medicated disc contains Salicylic Acid 40% in a synthetic rubber-based vehicle.
The following information is taken directly from the box:
Clear Away® Plantar Wart Remover System For Feet:
•Cushions as it heals™
•Maximum strength available
•Odorless
Indications:
For removal of plantar warts on the bottom of the foot. The plantar wart is recognized by its location only on the bottom of the foot, its tenderness and the interruption of the footprint pattern.
Directions:
Wash and dry affected area thoroughly. Apply medicated disc (packet A) directly over wart. If necessary, cut disc to fit wart. Self-adhesive cushioning pads (packet B) may be used to conceal medicated disc and wart. Repeat procedure every 48 hours as needed (until wart is removed) for up to 12 weeks.
Warning:
For external use only. Do not use this product on irritated skin, on any area that is infected or reddened, if you are a diabetic, or if you have poor blood circulation. If discomfort persists, see your doctor. Do not use on moles, birthmarks, warts with hair growing from them, genital warts or warts on the face or mucous membranes. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
CUSHION, MY FOOT!
The medicated discs did work, though oh so slowly. It took ten weeks of treatment to finally remove my plantar wart. The discs and cushions were easy to apply and as long as I didn’t go barefooted they stayed in place the full two days, even through showers. Do not believe the “Cushions as it heals™”, the cushions are thin and at no time did I experience “pain relief”. Plantar warts hurt and even adding extra cushions did not help. The Salicylic Acid that is used to remove the warts caused even more pain. I would experience a burning pain for hours after changing the discs as directed.
RECOMMENDATION
Do I recommend Dr. Scholl’s® Clear Away® Plantar Wart Remover System For Feet or not? I am still asking myself as I write this review. It worked, so I would have to recommend it because it did remove the plantar wart. However, if asked would I use this product again, I would have to say “NO”. I would wait to see the Podiatrist and hope the treatment used by them would be faster and offer more comfort from the pain of the wart.
*FYI
How do you know if you have a plantar wart? Plantar warts are usually hard, flat and have a rough surface with a well-defined boundary. They are usually varying shades of gray or brown with pinpoints of black in the center. Coming in contact with a papova virus causes warts. The virus usually enters the body through a crack or break in the skin. Plantar warts like all other warts are contagious. The virus spreads like any other virus, through touching, scratching or coming into contact with any skin that is shed from the wart. You can find warts all over the body, however, only those warts found on the sole of the feet are considered “plantar warts”.
