mmcphee's Full Review: Claritin 24 Hour Allergy Tablets 10 Each
This seems to be a miserable year for seasonal allergies for both my husband and I. To try and dry up our runny noses my husband purchased a box of Claritin.
The Basics
There are several different kinds of Claritin, this version contains 10 mg of Loratadine, which is an antihistamine. The pills are small, white and uncoated. Claritin is indicated for the relief of runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and itching of the nose or throat. Adults and children ages 6 and up take one tablet daily. There are of course a host of warnings on the back of the box that you should take the time to read yourself.
My Experience
It has been a long time since I needed to take an allergy pill on a regular basis. The last pill that really worked for me was Seldane. I was devastated when they took it off the market and despite trying lots of other pills I was never really happy with any of them. Benaryl works well but leaves me too sleepy. But this spring I was sneezing so much and not sleeping well so I decided to try my husbands Claritin.
I was shocked at how well it works. It only takes 20-30 minutes for my nose to dry up and the sneezing to stop. I find that the one small pill does indeed last 24 hours. My husband has similar results. Although it does not make us drowsy we are both sleeping much better now that we are taking Claritin, becuase we can finally breath. I have not experienced any noticeable side effects.
My only complaint is the blister pack the pills come in. They are designed so you peel back the corner of the outer cover to expose the pill. I can never get the cover to peel back. It tears off before I get to the well that holds the pill. I end up pushing the pill out through the backing. I have yet to crush a pill doing it this way, but I am sure I will eventually. And at the price they charge for these pills ($23 for 40 doses) I dont want to waste them.
Final Thoughts
Claritin works quickly to relieve my seasonal allergy symptoms without side effects. I like that I only need to take one pill a day, but I do wish it was a little easier to get at that pill!
