| dodders's Full Review: Chill Out * by The KLF |
The list of ambient house albums in 1989 was short. Empty, in fact. And then came the mighty KLF with Chill Out and the world was never the same again. With a heavy nod in the direction of Pink Floyd and flowing like a road trip across America, this definitive album drifts across your living room and wraps you gently in its arms.
Compiled from a seemingly never ending archive of odd sound effects coupled with lilting vocals, the KLF pluck sliding melodies out of thin air. Crickets chirp, cowbells jangle, trains hoot and demented Mexican radio announcers make themselves heard through crackly vinyl effects - the sum is most definitely greater than its parts. You can't dance to it, and you'd be hard put to play it so you're best off just, well, chillin' out. Lie back and relax and everything will be fine.
All great albums tell a story and this one is no different. There is a definite progression from one track to the next and the boundries between songs are blurred as the ending melody from one forms the beginning of the next. Its a genuine disappointment when after only 45 minutes, you have to reach for the remote control again. The world seems suddenly harsher when the music stops.
Its the sort of CD you will probably wear out due to repeated plays. Its difficult to tire of this because you're not listening to music, you're experiencing a mood. This is aromatherapy for the ears - it infuses your room and soothes your nerves, it caresses your aches and eases your pains.
And, amazingly, it still sounds fresh today. The ambient acts that have sprung up since are still stepping in the footprints of this groundbreaking album. Tune in, turn on and chill out.
