| moonsista's Full Review: Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash |
Because I like nearly everything I get from Origins, when my Origins Starter Set For Combination Skin arrived, I was excited. I was particularly interested in the Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash because I love to try new skin cleansers. I also like foaming cleansers! So the word frothy ensured a foaming cleanser that would treat my combination skin (oily nose, dry chin, somewhat dry forehead cheeks)!
Tell Me More!!
Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash is a very thick, pearly white cleanser that you squeeze out of a clear upside-down tube with a white flip top lid. The scent is a very light spearmint scent that is not over-powering at all. My 1.7 oz. tube of Checks and Balances came in my Starter Set For Combination Skin, which cost $20.00. The full-size Checks and Balances is $16.50 and comes in one size (5 oz.). I got several weeks' worth of use out of my 1.7 oz. tube while using it twice a day; so I would think that a 5 oz. tube would last you at least a month and a half or so, depending on how often you use it and how much you use each time.
Origins' website says this about this product: This gentle, frothy face wash cleverly cleanses faces with dry and oily places. Konjac Powder soaks up oil then keeps it well in check, while Wheat Protein balances and protects dry prone zones. And Tourmaline assures you that when you grab the grime you leave the good behind. Skin feels comfortably refreshed after cleansing, never tight, pulled, or parched.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Purified water, lavender, potassium myristate, glycerin, potassium behenate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, potassium palmitate, potassium laureate, potassium stearate, peg-3 distearate, chamomile, spearmint, geranium, lavender, bergamot, tourmaline, laminaria saccharina extract, amorphophallus konjac root powder, hydrolyzed wheat protein, cetearyl alcohol, polyquaternium-7, butylene glycol, disodium edta, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone.
Why It May Take You Awhile To Get Used To Checks and Balances:
If you are like me, you have used plenty of drugstore brand facial cleansers. The quality lacks - but you may not know this until you use a really good quality cleanser. This is what happened to me. I realized I wasn't doing my face any favors!
The first time I used Checks and Balances, I didn't like it at all. It wasn't foamy enough for my taste. I also noticed that it left a film on my face. I used it for three days in a row and then went back to a drugstore brand.
A few days went by and I noticed that the few dry spots on my face seemed drier than in the prior few days. Hmmm. I usually wash my face in the shower using lukewarm water, so I tried washing my face slowly, at the sink. I wanted to use Checks and Balances slowly and carefully, to make sure I had given it a fair chance.
The thing that was bothering me the most was the film I had noticed on my face. After washing my face carefully and slowly, I rinsed and dried my face and left the bathroom for a few minutes in order for my face to rest a little. I went back into the bathroom and looked in the mirror, touching my face to check out my dry and oily areas. Well, lo and behold - that "film" was not "film" - it was moisture on my face. My face was moisturized and felt smooth and soft.
I'm not sure if I rushed in the shower and didn't do a good job of washing my face or if I just wasn't used to having a cleanser actually moisturize my skin!
More About My Checks and Balances Experience:
Since I wear a makeup foundation, it's important to me that a cleanser remove all traces of it - Checks and Balances removes all the makeup from my face with no problem and without lots of scrubbing.
Checks and Balances did not dry out any part of my combination skin. My skin felt smooth and moisturized in all areas.
I continued to use Checks and Balances for a few weeks until it was gone. I missed it when it was gone - I liked the extra moisture I was getting!
Explaining The Cons:
I have to tell you that this cleanser does NOT keep oil "in check" like it claims to. I have an oily nose, and my nose is just as oily as ever after using this cleanser. Also, this cleanser deposits the moisturizing properties on my nose too - I can feel it! This is not a huge problem for me, because I am constantly touching up my makeup, and don't mind powdering my nose several times a day (I'm used to it!). I'm more concerned with getting moisture to the dry areas of my face as well as to my neck.
If you have combination skin and are used to drugstore brands, you may not like Checks and Balances at first either. I mistook moisture for "film"! You may also not be used to the low lather - there isn't tons of bubbles and lather with this one!
Lets Talk About The Price:
The price of $16.50 for 5 oz. is expensive.
To Buy Again Or Not To Buy Again - THAT Is The Question!
I have not purchased a full-size tube yet. Right now I am using up two other brands of cleanser that I want to get rid of before I make a decision. I really DO miss the moisture, and with winter coming, I will really need it. I am having a hard time getting past the price, though! If my skin gets any drier, though, I may just buy a tube and stick with it - because at that point, I'll pay anything to not have a dry, flaky chin (and cheeks)!
