GL2 tape system needs to be recalled

Pros: Wonderful video camera

Cons: Faulty substandard tape handling probably designed for planned obsolescence not up to presented performance

The Bottom Line: Canon needs to honestly recall the tape handling system due to the number of customers experiencing failures in a short period as this cancels out any of its great qualities

My GL2 was eagerly awaited and received. I have been using a XL1 since April 2000 which has well over 350 hours of shooting time, not counting tape packing, playback and dubbing. It has survived harsh environments and handling and is still running strong.
The GL2 was a budgetary purchase and was utilized as a primary camera on shoots since delivery in February 2003.
Wonderful performance as well as the XL1 without the bulk.
However, after only about 40 hours of shooting and playback, without warning, 3 days after another shoot and the night before a wedding - the tape handling system fails.
"REMOVE THE CASSETTE"
The GL2 was treated a lot better than the XL1 through a shorter period of use and primarily indoors without condensation issues. Purchase of a secondary GL2 was in the works when this happened and I'm horrified at my disappointment over this issue. A day of telephone and online troubleshooting with Canon only met with a simple reply to send it in. Further checks revealed the common problem with the tape handling system others have met. I have not gotten an estimate over the repair yet but I can only imagine as it's outside of the year's warranty. Canon's reputation drops a bit in the polls with this product. I've not only lost a customer but my investment in this camera for the down time and repair costs.
