| penguinman's Full Review: CCM Externo 60 Senior Ice Hockey Skates 02 |
As a guy who just picked up the game two years ago, I will admit that I am not entirely privy to all of the things the skate world has to offer. That said, what I do know is what feels good, and the answer to that is my Externo 60's. I managed to pick up a pair for $25 (they were a half season old, used by a Cornell Defenseman before he switched to Vapor XXs... more on that later) last year and decided to see if i skated any better in them than my CCM 652s which I loved.
The things I like about my 60's much more than the 652's is that they seem to fit my foot a lot better. Whereas the 652's seemed to place a great deal of pressure at the top of my arch to the point of a dead foot, I can skate all day long in my Externos. In addition to that, not only are they lighter, they also seem to be better padded; having taken slapshots off the ankle, I could skate the next shift with my Externos, not so with the 652's.
My only complaint about them is that I already preferred the Tuuk runners of the bauers i learned on to the Prolite steels, and these skates were no different. Even more aggravating was that the original owner had them radiused in such a way that the front of the skate was identical to the back, which means that it is a much more neutral balance. I'm used to having my weight rather far forward, so after a few more sharpens (the blades are already pretty work out), I'm going to either get a new pair of steels and have them adjusted to my liking, or get a pair of Bauer Lightspeeds put on them.
My take: Now that the CCM Vectors are out, I've seen skate shops like Zwickers (Bedford, MASS) and Sports Etc. (Arlington, MASS) blowing these skates out for $100 a pair, which is an absurd price. They are better skates than pretty much every CCM Vector, save for the ZG and Pro models, and as good or better than all of the Vapor models, save for the XX. Highly Recommended.
