The tandoori chicken at Breads of India comes to the table on a cast-iron skillet so sizzlingly hot that the handful of chopped onions, raw when sprinkled on seconds ago in kitchen, caramelize almost instantly into delicate, luscious savoriness. The marinade for the chicken varies from night to night, but is consistently delicious, the best one containing saffron and other spices that turn the chicken a kind of lurid orange. Tender, juicy and perfectly cooked, each piece of chicken breast is completely permeated with the marinade, which is so achingly good that the little bowl of curry sauce you can order (about $2.00 extra) is totally unnecessary. You end up using it as dip to submerge little torn-off, steaming hot pieces of perfect Indian bread (Nan), the specialty of the house. Every night there are different types of Nan - sprinkled with garlic and sesame; layered with mint and coriander; poppy-seed and whole-wheat are just a few of the delicious varieties we have tried.
I'm not sure if the ambiance of Breads of India counts as a drawback. The restaurant has a small, cube-shaped dining area that seats about 30. The decor is kind of perfunctory, although there are some nice wall-hangings. The tables and chairs are standard-issue and the floor is linoleum. However, the lack of distracting beauty forces you to focus on the food in a way that is completely justified. If tandoori chicken ever deserved full, reverent attention, this does.
Reservations are not accepted. Get there early in order to put your name on a waiting list at the door, and be prepared to share a large table with another party. On weekends, you may have to wait as long as an hour for a table, but the usual wait is 20 to 30 minutes. The one thing I haven't enjoyed there is the mango lassi - it is watery and tasteless. I recommend the mango juice instead. Prices are moderate but very reasonable for the quality. The vegetarian and lamb curry dishes are also fantastic.
