Bloomerific's Full Review: Born on a Pirate Ship by Barenaked Ladies
The Barenaked Ladies are triumphant again with their 3rd studio album, "Born on a Pirate Ship." One can sense their maturation in this album, but they still retain their trademark humor and smart lyrics. This album is two wonders in one: 14 songs that make you laugh, cry, and repeat; and the CD is enhanced: y ou can experience the 'Ladies in all of their wonderment!!
This was the Ladies' first album without Andrew Creeggan, who was their keyboardist and bassist Jim Creeggan's brother. This brings a little bit of a strange something to this album; almost as if the group is searching for that lost "puzzle piece" to make their group the fivesome that it was meant to be. But don't get me wrong, the sound is still distinctly Barenaked, and awesome!
I love this album from start to finish but highlights include the wonderfully stirring "Straw Hat and Old Dirty Hank," the comical "I Know," the song that continually makes me cry "I Live With It Every Day," the 'Ladies most excellent "break-up" song "Break Your Heart," the song that was featured on the "Friends" soundtrack--"Shoebox," and "Spider in My Room"---which features an excellent Native American group, Stoney Park Pow-Wow Singers (hint: you can witness part of the recording session with Jim Creeggan and Stoney Park during the enhanced CD portion).
There is a surprise around every corner on this album. I highly recommend it; it would make a perfect stocking stuffer!
