| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Blue Moon Belgian White 2404b |
Brewed by Blue Moon Brewing Company, a subsidiary of Coors, Blue Moon Belgian White Ale is a wheat beer brewed in the Belgian tradition. This product is brewed with wheat, barley, spices, and ale yeast to produce a delicious beer product that will be enjoyed by almost anyone.
Basic Contents of this Beer:
This beer product pours to a golden/orange hue with a medium amount of foam and an aroma of wheat and spice. The body of the beer is cloudy, due to the fact that its unfiltered.
Tasting Blue Moon Belgian White yields a product that is moderately complex. I could taste wheat, orange, clove, coriander, with a little touch of lemon and grapefruit. Carbonation is active, in spite of the moderate level of foam, and with the mixture of citrus fruit flavors, it makes the product seem like a mixture of a traditional wheat beer, a shot of Sprite, and a dash of orange juice and spice. There isnt much hop taste, but you can tell the hops are there, hiding quietly behind the wheat, fruit, and spice flavors. It has an aftertaste of oranges and wheat.
Blue Moon brews this product using wheat, barley, coriander, orange peel, ale yeast, and other quality ingredients. The alcohol level is about 5.4 percent by volume and a 12 oz. Serving contains 171 calories.
Food Compatibility:
With an emphasis on the flavors of wheat and fruit, this product would go best with salad, appetizers, fruit pies, cheesecake, and possibly even chicken or fish. Its also very popular as a summertime beer, served with a slice of orange.
Final Thoughts:
Blue Moon Brewing Company is a craft brewery that is fully= owned by the Adolph Coors Company. It used to produce a full lineup of craft beer products, but I havent seen any Blue Moon products other than this one on the store shelves since Coors made the acquisition. Today, there are two Blue Moon brewing locations: one in Memphis and one in Denver and, as far as I know, Belgian White is the only Blue Moon product they produce. There might be some seasonal offerings, too, but I havent seen one in while.
The best thing about this beer is the fact that its a lighter, more refresher beer that still manages to have some character and complexity. Most lighter- bodied beer products are very direct, featuring only the taste of cereal grains, yeast, and hops. But Blue Moon Belgian White Ale is more interesting, with fruit and a touch of spiciness to make the beer more appealing while still maintaining a light enough taste to make it refreshing and casual.
Here in Ohio, its fairly easy to find Blue Moon Belgian White Ale. The product is distributed to most all of the same places that Coors is sold, and it has turned into one of the Coors companys most well- liked products. Coors, of course, doesnt brew any craft beer of its own (unless you want to count the seasonal Winterfest beer) and I dont know if the company would have even entered this market except through acquisition. But Im sure Coors is pleased that it made the purchase of this brewery. It would have been nice if Coors hadnt discontinued the production of the rest of the Blue Moon product line. Maybe one day they will expand and brew more craft products once again under the Blue Moon label.
Blue Moon Belgian White Ale is a smooth, refreshing wheat beer product that most any drinker will enjoy. Its a good starter beer for those who dont normally like beer. The slightly sweeter than average taste along with the fruit, wheat, and touch of spice will satisfy even the harshest beer critics as well as the most novice among the beer drinking public. I enjoy a bottle or two every now and then myself. Its a good beer option when you want to taste something a little lighter and more thirst- quenching and refreshing and you dont want to feel full or bloated. Even the aftertaste is pleasant and it whets your drinking appetite to the point where you crave another glass. It that sense, its actually a little bit addictive. One taste, and you invariably want another glassful of this beer.
I give two thumbs- up to Blue Moon Belgian White Ale! It has won several awards, including a Gold Medal in the 1995 World Beer Championships and a Silver Medal in both the 1996 and 1997 World Beer Championships. Its refreshing and tasty, and it will be acceptable to most anyone whose lips it touches. Buy a few six packs at your next party and see for yourself!
