marsha32's Full Review: Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book
The Better Homes and Garden New Cookbook that I have in my lap is definitely not new. This one was handed down to me from my mother, well sort of. For years, everytime I needed a recipe or instructions on how to cook something I found myself borrowing this cookbook from her. Several years ago she told me to just keep it. :) Now, she borrows it from me!
This edition is from 1969. I don't know that the cookbook has changed much over the years except in price. I don't know how much the newer versions cost, but my mom paid $5.95 for this one.
Better Home and Garden New Cookbook is not set up like most cook books. It's in the form of a binder. Mine has 5 rings. This is a great convenience when you don't want to have the whole book on your counter when making a recipe. This also makes it very easy to take pages that you may want to copy to send to friends etc.
The book is tab indexed. There are 20 sections which are:
1 Appetizers and Beverages
2 Barbeques
3 Breads
4 Cakes, Frostings and Fillings
5 Candies
6 Canning and Freezing
7 Casseroles and One dish meals
8 Cookies
9 Desserts
10 Easy Meals
11 Meats
12 Pastry and Pies
13 Poultry, Fish and Eggs
14 Salads and salad dressing
15 Soups and sauces
16 Vegetables
17 Special Helps
18 Meal Planning and Nutrition
19 Table Settings and entertaining

This cookbook came to me with a ton of paperclips on different pages. Ok, I will count them....22 to be exact. These are pages of recipes that my mother used on a regular basis. I've never bothered to remove them as I have used some of the same recipes.
If you know someone who is recently engaged or getting married, this makes a wonderful gift. Any novice cook can use the Better Home and Garden New Cookbook. There are step by step instruction for hundreds of cooking items with pictures included. Only a few examples are: how to test a custard for doneness, how to carve a rib roast, how to unmold gelatin, and how to measure correctly. You will fine before and after measurement charts, food storage guides, how to use different ingredients and so much more.
If you are only going to have one cookbook in your home then Better Home and Garden New Cookbook is definitely the one that I would recommend. It's 400 pages of cooking insight for everyone.
