| e927's Full Review: Best Western Plantation Hale Suites |
I stayed at the Best Western Plantation Hale during my recent visit to Hawaii. I would have no problem staying here again. I give it three stars because it is far from a "resort" hotel -- there are no on-site restaurants, fancy gardens or tiki-torch lined walkways, but it was very nice nonetheless. The pools were quiet, clean and uncrowded. There are restaurants within walking distance at the Coconut Marketplace and at nearby hotels, as well as several within a 5-minute drive.
But perhaps most appreciated were the spacious accommodations. For less than the price of a standard hotel room, we got what was essentially a one-bedroom apartment: kitchen (w/ stove, full-size fridge, microwave, dishes, utensils and even a blender), living/dining area (w/ sleeper sofa), bedroom with TV and 2 double beds, bathroom and private patio. The furnishings and decor are a little cheap/tired looking (think cushioned wicker furniture; visit www.plantation-hale.com to see photos) but it was nice to be able to spread out and relax, just like at home. Most of the rooms faced small courtyards between the buildings -- not an exceptionally beautiful or romantic view.
Plantation Hale is located on the east side of the island, known as the Coconut Coast. There were a lot of pretty palm trees in this general area, however, the area seemed a little rundown when compared to the southern side (Poipu), which was much more upscale. The adjacent Coconut Marketplace was convenient but most of the shops were t-shirt and souvenir shops -- not a lot of high-end stores or restaurants. But that also meant that the restaurant prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in Hawaii. I've heard traffic congestion can be a problem in this area but I did not experience any significant issues. In fact, we enjoyed the convenience of being centrally located and not having to drive a long time to get around the island.
There is an access road, a wide grassy field and a narrow strip of bushes/trees separating the hotel from the beach. The surf was rough and there was a lot of driftwood, so you wouldn't want to go swimming. However, Lydgate Park is just down the road if you want a swimmable beach.
If you're expecting a resort environment or a five-star hotel, you won't be happy here. But if you're looking for a spacious, clean, comfortable place to stay for a reasonable price, consider staying at Plantation Hale.
