| jazzangler's Full Review: Bayliner 2052 Trophy Walkaround DX/LX |
I've been a Pennsylvania resident and avid fisherman for over twenty years. During that time I've spent a small fortune in Delaware charter boat fees and gas for friends' boats. This year my wife and I purchased our first boat, a 1998 Bayliner Trophy 1703 center console only to trade up less than 6 months later. The smaller boat just wasn't suited to all of the fishing opportunities we wanted to explore off of the Delaware coast.
Venturing outside of Indian River Inlet in Delaware into open water, we quickly discovered the limitations of an otherwise fine 17 foot saltwater fishing boat. After taking water over the transom during a particularly treacherous trip through the Inlet, my wife and I turned to each other and echoed actor Roy Scheider's character in the movie JAWS when we said simultaneously, "I think we're gonna need a bigger boat!"
Having become fans of Trophy's great bang-for-the-buck value, we settled on a new leftover 2000 model Trophy 2052 and we're extremely happy with our choice. Aside from a minor electrical malfunction which the dealer quickly addressed, we've had many hours of problem free fun since the day we purchased our "dream boat".
Our boat is equipped with the optional 4.3 liter, electronic fuel ignition Mercruiser V6 which was a major selling point over the standard 135 HP offered by Bayliner. Our 210 HP stern drive provides plenty of power in the relatively calm confines of Delaware's Rehobeth Bay and gets us to some of our favorite off-shore fishing sites fast. Steering at very low speeds takes a little getting used to but I suppose that's true with any boat. The trim tabs and deep-V hull design take us smoothly through the choppy Inlet and safely out into open water with confidence. The fish wells are large and easily drained with the touch of a switch. A swim step ladder makes getting on and off easy. The helm is laid out well and the cockpit's two removable seats can be left in for the ride and removed while fishing. My wife and two teenage children are quite comfortable as we cruise the inshore hot spots in search of fish.
I've caught fish from more expensive boats and neither the fish nor I were especially impressed with the brand name or higher sticker price. As for size, the Trophy 2052 is large enough to make us feel safe on the ocean yet small enough to trailer with our SUV. My family and I have spent several exciting Saturdays catching fish in saltwater and relaxing Sundays swimming at the lake. Whether we're catching fish or just catching a little sun, the Trophy 2052 has exceeded our expectations.
