| bonniesayers's Full Review: Bayer Genuine Aspirin, Children's chewable tablets |
Several weeks ago my son was having serious toothache pain so I headed over to Rite-Aid for something to help his symptoms. Unfortunately I found nothing suitable for our needs but at the end of the aisle noticed the last box on the shelf for Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets. The price was certainly well worth the purchase at $2.29 with the generic brand selling at $1.99. Just yesterday I noticed this same box containing 36 tablets for sale at my local grocery store for $3.69.
The light green box is for the orange flavor with the pinkish box containing the cherry flavor. If both flavors were available I still would have chosen orange since my son prefers that taste. Perhaps someday in the future they will have a chocolate flavor! Since it had been years that I had chewed one of these tablets I opted to have one while my son was taking his recommended dose of four tablets.
At first the taste was yummy with one bite it dissolved quickly to that somewhat chalky taste that needs to be topped off with a glass of cold water. My seven-year old followed my lead and finished a glass of water. I did have to explain to my son that it would take some time to feel better. The first time the Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets was for toothache pain due to a loose tooth. This took over forty minutes for my son to feel better and have some macaroni and cheese for dinner.
We have since used this for a headache and blistered fingers from the monkey bars at school. The pain seems to subside within thirty minutes now. The tablets are so small that you can chew them all at one time. They come out of the container rather quickly and can fall out of your hand. The bottle is a child resistant cap that is easier for me than most other lids. You will need to press down and turn to open this and place tightly back on.
Rite Aid had a sticker on the side of the box where the phone number is present as well as the ingredients. The container has listed on the side label the expiration date as being August 2003, so almost a year I have to utilize the Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets. I can see this container being empty in another month or so at the rate my son is taking them. The expiration date is not noted on the box though.
This is not intended for children under the age of three, but can be used for children over the age through adulthood. Storage of the container should be at room temperature and away from children. It should also be explained that this is not candy, although the taste could be similar to that of Pez candy. The restrictions for the Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets are different for children and adults. For example an Adult should discontinue use if the pain persists for ten days, while with Children the cap for days is only five. For all consumers if fever is still persisting seek counsel from a Doctor after three days. The dosage can be repeated in four hours with the maximum of five doses in any given twenty-four hour period.
The box lists the age range from where to start to under the last age with the weight variations for that group. So when it states “six to under nine”, a nine-year old would not follow that line but the next one. The recommendations are as follows:
3 to under 4 years of age 32 to 35 lbs 2 tablets
4 to under 6 years of age 36 to 45 lbs 3 tablets
6 to under 9 46 to 65 lbs 4 tablets
9 to under 11 66 to 76 4 – 5 tablets
11 to under 12 77 to 83 4 - 6 tablets
Adults and kids over 12 N/A 5 – 8 tablets
Both my kids fall in the 6 to under 9 category and the weight limits as well. The uses for Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets are minor aches, pains and headaches. This also helps reduce fevers associated with colds, teething and sore throat. My seven-year old has complained in the past of sore throats so this will be given those times from now on.
I know from experience as a young teen or pre-teen that I could not swallow the large asthma pills I had to take growing up. They ended up being chopped into applesauce until I finally swallowed one by accident. I never looked at applesauce the same and to this day cannot stand the smell of the stuff. If only more products were made in chewable form for those who have difficulties swallowing or for the elderly and disabled communities.
The active ingredient is 81 mg of aspirin. As I check the box now I see it is advised to drink with water so we were doing it right all along as I cheated and did not see that beforehand. As with all over the counter medicines if there is an accidental overdose you contact the Poison Control Center, number found in phonebooks and should be posted near phones and on refrigerators.
The motto for Bayer® Aspirin is Take it for Pain, Take it for Life. They have won the International Aspirin® Award for the seventh time. Genuine Bayer® Aspirin can be taken by people on an aspirin regimen under a doctor's supervision for heart attack and stroke prevention. Genuine Bayer Aspirin can even stop you from dying if you take it as directed by a doctor during a heart attack. For the price and convenience it certainly be a staple in every medicine cabinet.
There are precautions that need to be adhered to before you take Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets. Children that have asthma, arthritis, ulcers and recurring stomach problems need to get a Doctor’s opinion before administering. For adults if you have gout, arthritis, diabetes or thinning of the blood (anticoagulation) consult with your Doctor as well. Once you have taken a dosage of Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets and any of these signs become visible you will need to ask your Doctor and discontinue using:
Pain and/or fever gets worse, ringing in the ears or hearing becomes worse, new and unexpected symptoms occur, vomiting, rash or nausea and if a sore throat is persistent for two or more days.
For adults who choose to take the Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets they need to limit the alcohol intake to under three glasses as stomach bleeding can occur. Women should not use aspirin the last three months of pregnancy. For those in the child bearing years or nursing they can get advise from a health care professional. Anyone allergic to aspirin cannot take this product. If you have had oral surgery or tonsillectomy there is a seven day waiting period before you can take the Bayer® Genuine Aspirin, Children’s chewable tablets.
A serious warning for families must be taken if your child has chicken pox or flu symptoms, because a Doctor needs to rule out Reye’s syndrome. This is a rare but serious illness that is associated with aspirin. It does seem to me there are more warnings for this than the other medicines my son took when he had swollen glands, sore throat, cough and runny nose a few weeks ago.
The next time I speak with our Pediatrician I will let her know I have been giving this on occasion to my seven-year old. The other morning my son took just two before heading off to school because his blister was hurting him, perhaps I should have placed a note in his backpack in case any unusual symptoms occurred. The other times I have been present when my son had taken a dose.
Noted on their website, Each Genuine Bayer® Aspirin caplet and tablet is coated with Toleraid® Micro-Coating to make it easier to swallow, and there are also gelcaps to increase swallowability. Genuine Bayer® Aspirin is both caffeine-free and sodium-free. I could not find this listed anywhere on the box or the container and think it would be beneficial to have this where those who take this can know this data.
The seal should not be broken that is under the cap and there will be a ball of cotton to remove. Personally I do not like when brands do this because the bottle opening is so small and the cotton is not easy to pull out. Extreme caution should be used when administering the tablets to a child as they are very small and one could get dropped and left behind.
The container is small enough to be kept in a purse for emergency use when a child is in pain and you are on the road. I would make sure this is kept in an area far away from children. This will leave a taste in your mouth that is not great. Since I purchased the last carton at the store I could not tell if this is sold in other sizes. The search function has not been working properly at the website, but I think this might be sold in the form of 20 tablets as well.
One other piece of data I could not find was whether this can be taken on an empty stomach or not.
