We have had the Battat Count & Match Pegboard for several years. I cannot recall exactly how I obtained this, as the box shows no price tag or sticker. I have a feeling this might have been purchased through an Avon Representative or we received it as a gift. There was a time that I was finding lots of interesting toys for preschoolers through the Avon campaigns.
This contains twenty-six pieces, which consists of one board and the twenty-five pegs. The box states this is Battat Pre-School and for the ages of two and older. Without retaining the box there is no clue who makes this Count & Match Pegboard because it is not listed on the individual pegs or the board. The box is good for storing this in a closet when kids get bored with it.
I have had ours sitting on top of the Fisher Price Activity Table with the pegs aligned by color and shape. Pegboards are one of the easiest activities for my six-year old non-verbal autistic son as well as a favorite of his. Although we already had the Discovery Toys Giant Pegboard this Battat Count & Match Pegboard has been utilized more often.
The base is sturdy and still intact where the other one has a crack and not as smooth corners. The base is made of plastic and has four slanted corners. The board measures in the middle almost ten inches, while the top section is close to 6 ½ inches. The bottom is not quite 6 ¼ inches and the sides are the same measurements. There are five holes across and down. I imagine a small child could place something in one of the holes as I can almost get my pinky finger in one.
The base is blue with the pegs green, red, orange, yellow and red. The pegs all have holes in them with a ¼ inch stub to place inside the hole located on the baseboard. When more than one child is playing with the Battat Count & Match Pegboard you can have one attaching the pegs while another is placing them on the baseboard. This is suitable for parallel play, which is what children in this age range are starting to do.
During the three years my son spent in the Preschool Special Education class it was often reported how fond he was of pegboards. They had the wood kind with long skinny pegs while at home he was able to utilize another kind with the Battat Count & Match Pegboard. When my son has shown an interest in a specific activity or toy at school or therapy sessions I do not like to get the same exact one for home use as this might diminish his interest at the other locations.
After awhile the teachers have wanted my son to expand his interest into other activities but he always comes back to the Battat Count & Match Pegboard when at home. The classes usually have activities lasting from 15-20 minutes and to get my son to the table a puzzle, beads or pegboard is necessary. These pegs are shaped round, heart, star, square and triangle. The colors are bright and have not faded over the years. The blue baseboard has a few white scratch marks but that is for wear and tear. This does get dusty a bit if left out over months. The pegs are never dirty but they can be rinsed off if they are played with outdoors.
When you turn over the baseboard the holes are open and with some imagination this side can be played with if a child so desires. It just so happens the pegs fit this way too and can be stacked without tipping over. When my son was in an Early Intervention Program the assistant made the home visits twice a month and this was utilized at those times. My son would sit at the table and have to hand her a yellow peg and then an orange one and so on. This is a great tool for Speech and Occupational Therapists for sessions on having the child follow the one word commands and then sorting and matching the pegs.
Once the whole baseboard is assembled with all twenty-five colored and shaped pegs it is still easy to transport to another spot to keep on display or place back in the box. The pieces are chunky and easy for the two-year old and older to grasp and fit inside the hole. This would be a suitable present for a younger child as well as an older one that might have a disability and only have a limited attention span.
