Bass: The most widely available English beer in the States

What kind of an Englishman would I be if I had reviewed over 60 or so beers, without reviewing the most readily available English brew available in the USA? Bass is becoming more and more popular in restaurants and bars in California. The Bass brewery is the biggest in England, although over there it’s the company’s other, cheaper brands which are more popular. “Stones” is the company’s bitter, and “Carling Black Label”, the lager that account for the brewery’s success in the UK. The Bass brand is a premium brand and its biggest export. It’s also the company’s oldest brand, brewed since 1779.
Bass was one of the first reviews I wrote when I joined epinions, and I have since deleted it. It wasn’t until Thursday that I had a bottle, and Friday I had a couple of pints on draft that I felt ready to write a new review.
Bass pours to a pale amber color, with a nice head of foam. The body itself is fairly foamy, with a light carbonation. The aroma is pretty subtle with a maltiness as well as a little yeast. It’s fairly light and foamy on the palate, while the initial flavor is fairly sweet and malty. The finish is mild with just a hint of bitterness. The aftertaste is fairly short which makes this a fairly quick drinker.
Bass is a fairly light ale and an easy drink to swallow. It should work well for almost any beer drinker as it’s not at all dominating, while having a very pleasing and refreshing flavor. As for an English pale ale, I prefer Samuel Smith’s although Bass is much more available, and cheaper, and I drink it regularly. For me it’s one of those staple diet beers, a reliable beer that I’ll drink when I can’t find anything else interesting.
As for food I have to recommend the great English cuisine such as Fish & Chips, Steak & Kidney Pie, or any roasted meat dish.
