The concept of a chewable aspirin isnt new but I do have to say that no one serves up 227 milligrams of pain killing power like Aspergum. The beauty of this product is that it starts to work quickly to relieve pain. Most people use this for a sore throat but I take these when I have some minor pain but dont want something that is so strong that it is going to upset my stomach. I do use these from time to time when I feel a cold starting and it does work wonders when you have a sore throat and swallowing is painful. Just pop one or two of these, chew them for a while [just like gum] and the aspirin in it starts working. Because this isnt being swallowed whole like a tablet or caplet, it gets into your system quicker and eliminates having to take more than the normal dose of other over the counter cold medicines. Some people might not like the taste of it as it starts to break down but I love it.
Aspergum Aspirin Pain Reliever
Orange Flavor Gum Tablets
One of the best things about this product, outside of its ability to work quick, is that the pieces are individually sealed inside a foil blister pack. These arent the easiest of things to get open but they do protect the pieces from getting banged up. The individually packaged pieces also mean that you can snap a few off the strip and take them with you without having to haul around a bottle. Another advantage is that you dont need to have water or something liquid to wash down a capsule or caplet; this is a great alternative for those who have trouble swallowing pills or have sore glands that hurt like hell when you do go to swallow. Since this contains aspirin you will want to weigh out the pros and cons of this before you use it. If you are taking any type of blood thinning medications you should consult your doctor first. On a side note, women who are menstruating will want to think about choosing something that doesnt contain aspirin. You could experience a little extra bleeding if you use this more than once or twice since aspirin is known to thin blood - you wont actually be bleeding more but the blood will be thinner giving you the impression that you are bleeding more [hey, that is what my pharmacist told me].
You can find this product at most retail stores like Wal-Mart, Target and K-Mart as well as in pharmacies and drug stores. Each pack contains twelve gum tablets that are to be consumed orally. I havent seen this in any other size than the twelve count but who knows, there may be a super sized version out there somewhere. The gum tablets are on two cards of six tablets each, the lot number and expiration date are stamped on each one of these so that if you do remove them from the strip, you will still have some of the pertinent information. There is a white A printed on the tablets but dont get alarmed if you dont see this when you are looking at them while still on the strip, sometimes they arent packed with the letter facing outward. The boxes that these are packaged in are not safety sealed so you will want to make sure that you check the strips before you use them [I check them before I buy them] so you can make sure that they are intact and havent been tampered with.
Suggested Dosage Amount
This is suggested for those twelve and older, if you have a child that is younger then twelve, consult your physician. You can chew two tablets every four hours with a maximum of sixteen per day. Normally I pop one of them and it seems to do the trick. Each tablet contains 227 milligrams of aspirin so if you are sensitive to it, you may want to take one instead of two. It usually takes about five minutes for me to start feeling some type of relief from pain, if I dont feel anything from it then I will take a second one. These are great for the kids to take with them if they arent feeling all that well, they dont have to try to find a water fountain and they really like the taste.
DioxideWarning
This was news to me but it is something that you need to know if you have a child that is sick. If they are suffering from chicken pox or symptoms of it, do not use this unless a doctor has approved it. There is an illness called Reyes Syndrome that they suspect is linked to the consumption of aspirin containing products. You would be wise to read the back of the package thoroughly to be aware of all warnings; these include allergies, alcohol warnings, age recommendations and drug facts. Even though this is an over the counter medication, it doesnt mean that is safe for everyone to consume.
Price
I try to stock up on these when they are on sale, when I cant catch them on sale I go to Wal-Mart because they have the lowest price. I pay about $2.50 - $3.00 a box for these and they are really worth it. The brood like to use this rather than taking a pill, they are just like me, they think they taste great. You will want to check the expiration date before you buy this, it is located on the outside of the box as well as on the carded pieces. It might not be the most cost effective pain reliever but when you want quick relief from a sore throat or a body ache, this is definately one of the best ways to go.
The Bottom Line
In my opinion this is a great product to have around if you want to get quick relief of some minor aches and pains - especially if you have a sore throat or feel the start of one coming on. I like the taste of it but Im weird - some people hate the taste of this and some love it. The brood like the orange and cherry so I always pick up a box of each flavor for them to try out. The orange is the easier of the two flavors to find in retail stores but if you like cherry flavored things, give them a try, you might like them more than the orange. Id also like to add that this contains gelatin so if you are a vegan this is a product that you will want to avoid. I mentioned this in another review and someone left a comment asking what gelatin had to do with the vegan lifestyle; gelatin is made from certain animals bones [mostly cow] and animal by-products therefore it is something that vegans avoid.
