FIRST IMPRESSIONS
I am a heavy runner. At 5'10', 200 pounds, I may not be as heavy as some, but I am definitely on the heavy side of runners. I also have "Severe "pedplanus", which is flat feet. My doctor said I have the worst case of flat feet she has ever seen. Nevertheless, I run about 20 miles a week. I never ran until about 5 years ago when I discovered the Brooks Beast. My feet always hurt after running even short distances (under 2 miles, even!!!). I then bought the Beast and began running regularly until I reached the point I am at now. I am currently in training for the Big Sur Marathon next summer.
I thought the Beast was the best thing since sliced bread and have owned 9 pairs since I first started running regularly. I went to get another pair and the guy at the shoe store brought out the Asics MC Plus along with the Beast and asked me to try the on. I wanted to humor him so I said "okay" but wasn't expecting much. What a surprise I had! I thought they were the best shoes I had ever worn. I immediately took them off and tried the Beast. The Beast didn't compare! The support and comfort you get from the MC Plus is much better than the Beast.
FIRST LONG RUN
I was excited to try these new shoes, so I went home and ran. As it happened, I had an 8 mile run that day. The shoes were a bit stiff, as new shoes are, but after the second long run(6 miles(that's long for me!!)), the shoes felt great!
CONSTRUCTION
The biggest difference between the Beast and the MC Plus is the arch support. The Beast offers the same rubber that the sole support is made of. The MC Plus' arch support is also the rubber but it is supported by a hard plastic mold. With the Beast, my arch still broke the plane of the bottom of my foot but with the MC Plus, the arch is well supported and does not break the plane. This will take a lot of pressure off your knees and ankles.
DURABILITY
I have had my first pair of the MC Plus for 4 months now and they are still holding up. The durability is mainly due to (in my opinion) to the arch support. I would buy a new pair of the Beast when my knees started hurting after a long run. That was usually about the 4 month point. The MC Plus looks like it will go about six months+ without the support break down.
WHO SHOULD BUY THIS SHOE?
If you have flat feet, over-pronate or are a heavy runner (>190 lbs) you might want to give this shoe a spin. If you have been wearing the Brooks Beast, try this shoe out. Most shoe stores that specialize in running shoes will let you run a mile or two in a new pair of shoes before you buy them. I strongly encourage you to do this. You will not be disappointed!
